Glad Nationaldag Sverige!
Today, Swedes celebrate two major events: the election of King Gustav Vasa and adoption of a new constitution.
On June 6, 1523, King Gustav Vasa was elected King and through him, the new and independent Sweden we know today was born. Fun fact: the Vasa Order of America was named after him.
Additionally, on June 6, 1809, Sweden adopted their new constitution. This is the same constitution that is used today. โIt clarified the roles of legislative, judicial and executive authority โ across parliament, the courts and the king โ while reducing the kingโs power.โ
Today, Swedes celebrate through communal time with friends and family, sharing food, song, and laughter. Blue and yellow flags are flown throughout the country and new Swedish citizens are welcomed on this day, as well. Throughout the Swedish diaspora, Swedish flag raising ceremonies take place, as well. Here in Massachusetts, the Swedish flag will be raised in Worcester on June 6 and Boston on June 12!
Grattis pรฅ nationaldagen, Sverige!
