Hello friends of Troop 38! As many of you know, this is our 100th year! The court of honor is set for September 28 at the Dansville Fish and Game Club. Past members. leaders, and committee members of Troop 38 are welcome to attend - and encouraged!

We are in the process of making a commemorative plaque for anyone who wants to purchase. These are cast iron, powder coated, machined, and clear coated - to mark our special year. Anyone interested in purchasing, these are $40 each. It is a great fundraiser for our troop and a great piece to put on your mantle. They measure about 8" in diameter.

Attached is the CAD artwork of the trivet for Troop 38, and the other is a similar trivet another troop did last year (to show the final product). If you are interested in purchasing, please PM the troop and we will be in touch with you. Limited quantities available!

Thank you for 100 years!

Boy Scout Troop 38, Dansville, NY work on service hours at Beaver Ponds (Ossian State Forest)

We arrived at Beaver Ponds around dusk on a brisk Friday night. For about half of the crew, this was a return trip from a few years ago when the legend of the golden spatula was born.
The Troop and personal gear was unloaded, with the Troop gear getting set up first. Then the tents went up and a small campfire was started in one of the 14 make shift fire pits in a 300 square foot area. During the first night the temperature got down to at least 24°F and it showed with the frost on the tents and vehicles as well as some ice that was forming on the edges of the pond. Besides the cold temperature the night was filled with sound of owls, coyotes, and even trains going through Canaseraga.
In the morning while some of the Scouts were cooking our breakfast, the others started to clean up the camp site which was one of the main purposes of this trip. The area closest to the road where we camped was in need of the most clean up. It was the largest of at least three camp sites around the pond. The clean-up included removing and filling over 16 fire pits with clean topsoil around our camp site. Three of which were in the parking area just west of the campsite. Breakfast that morning consisted of French toast that was cooked on the camp stoves, partially frozen bananas, apples, orange juice, milk and coffee.
During the rest of the day cleanup continued with some having other commitments to go to or come from. Fortunately everyone involved in the weekend trip was available for a group photo Saturday evening to show off the results of their hard work. We were also reminded of the wild life around us during the daylight hours with geese frequently visiting the pond being sure to announce their arrival. We also found a painted turtle about the size of a silver dollar.
When the clean-up of the three campsite and parking area was finished the Scouts had collected 23 bags of trash, a few metal chair frames, a tail light assembly, a tire, some bed springs and an New England Patriot pillow pet. The 60.5 service hours logged by the boys went toward time needed for their camping merit badge that nine of the boys completed, as well as rank advancements.
