GREA State President, Dr. Sallie Mills announced our moto for this year is Sound the Trumpet and the state project is the American Diabetes Association. Our State Convention has already been scheduled for May 4 - 6, 2027. We will meet at the Augusta Marriott again.

Dr. Amanda Sailors spoke with us on the literacy grant the county received. The program is called "Reader Nation". Dr. Sailors spoke of the poor oral language of children entering PreK and kindergarten and how this grant will be used to increase these skills. Improved oral language will lead to earlier and better reading skills.

The goals for "Reader Nation" are:
1. Establish the Early Literacy Community Coalition
2. Build community awareness for the importance of parents and caregivers verbally engaging children
3. Additional professional training for reading to children
4. Train fifty plus volunteers to read to PreK and kindergarten and follow up with a conversation about the book
5. Book access - enroll families in FIRST books and 1000 Books Before Kindergarten at Madison County Library.

Hey Madison County Retired Educators! Mark your calendars for our first meeting, September 8th, for the 2026 - 2027 year. We meet at Ila Restaurant at 11 for lunch followed by our program and business meeting.
All retired educators and interested community members are invited to join. We support and advocate for education in Madison County.

*June 2, 2026 - Planning Meeting at Ila Restaurant, 11AM. While all are welcome, officers and committee chairpersons and members need to attend.
*August 27, 2026 - Area 17/18 Meeting at the Gainesville Civic Center. Please contact Beth Thornton by July 30 if you plan to attend.

Several MCREA members attended the state GREA Convention in May. We welcomed our new President, Dr. Sallie Mills. The new theme is "Sound the Trumpet!" and the Presidents Charity is the American Diabetes Association.
