Smokey House Center Working Lands. Research. Education. http://www.smokeyhouse.org

In addition to managing 5,000 acres of conserved forest and farmland in southern Vermont, Smokey House Center’s fundamental purpose is to maintain a working landscape that promotes sustainable agricultural and forestry practices while engaging people in meaningful ways. This includes providing educational programming that enables people to develop the skills needed to be productive and self-sufficient members of their communities.

Invasive species don’t stand a chance with Burr and Burton Academy on the job. 🌿 Students joined Smokey House Center for their Service Day, lending their energy to invasive removal in our new silvopasture area. This kind of hands-on stewardship is exactly what this landscape needs. Thank you BBA—always a pleasure!

From start to finish. The team recently laid a new buried electrical line from the road to the Dorset Peak sugarbush sap house, one more major step toward getting this research operation up and running. Pretty soon nearly 6,000 taps will be installed, just in time for sugaring season and the start of our Adaptive Maple research in winter 2027. Stay tuned. 🍁

Alleys of strawberries growing between rows of honeyberries. Curving lines of elderberries planted along the contour of a stream. Maple trees tapped each spring while patches of forest botanicals such as ramps and ginseng awaken beneath their canopy. Sheep grazing in the shade below diverse canopies of chestnut and hickory. Chickens feeding on mulberries raining down from above.

This is agroforestry. And it is happening right here in Vermont. Smokey House Center recently wrote about the agroforestry movement taking root across our region. Link below to read more.
