From Dunollie:

While exploring the archives here at Dunollie, we recently uncovered a fascinating account bill dating from 1830, issued by James Dickson & Sons of Edinburgh. Totalling £39.2.4, the receipt lists an impressive variety of plants, shrubs, and vegetables, offering a vivid snapshot of what was being cultivated in the Dunollie garden nearly 200 years ago.

James Dickson & Sons had only recently taken on that name in 1825, following the death of James’s brother George. The business had previously traded as Dickson Brothers and Dickson & Co., and formed part of a long family tradition of nurserymen, seedsmen, and florists. Their roots lay in Hawick, where the family first established themselves, before expanding to Perth and eventually Edinburgh.

By the time of James Dickson’s death in 1834, just a few years after this bill was issued, the business had grown significantly, boasting an impressive 938 account holders. Among them was Captain John MacDougall of MacDougall, 25th Chief.

As the gardens at Dunollie begin to come alive this spring, it is lovely to imagine that some of the plants listed on this very bill may still be flowering here today, continuing a living connection between past and present.

This bill not only records a purchase, it tells a story of horticulture, heritage, and the connections between people and place in early 19th-century Scotland.

Have a look at the images, can you spot any familiar plant names?

We have just chosen our 2026 John Carasik Scholarship! Stay tuned to find out more! We’re now accepting applications for 2027!

The John S. Carasik Scholarship Fund is open to US citizens, preferably Clan members; who would go to Oban, Scotland to assist Museum Staff with the MacDougall Collection at Dunollie House, and to the Isle of Lismore to help with the Lismore Gaelic Heritage Museum.
