Stepping into novel outdoor spaces sparks neuroplasticity, triggering a rush of all the ‘feel goods’ that support memory, learning, and adaptability. Plus it’s POV GOAT, or so that’s what the young people tell us.

This crew is taking novelty to a whole new level on their week-long coastal expedition in Muscongus Bay. Sea kayaking, island hopping, tent camping, campfire cooking, preserve exploration, and even building custom benches from floating timbers they ‘harvested.’

Sunbeam is built around one simple idea: every young person deserves the chance to experience the magic of being outside, making friends, trying new things, playing hard, slowing down, and belonging.

We remove barriers and adapt the experience so that all kids can fully participate — because those experiences aren’t extras. They’re essential to growing up.

And every single body at Sunbeam, from their head to their toes, knows this to be true: there’s a place for me here. ☀️

Science tells us that just 2–3 days immersed in nature calms the nervous system. It’s also boatloads of fun, with a hefty dose of challenge.

A mini trip in Munscongus Bay is the perfect introduction. This awesome, hilarious crew kayaked to Hog Island. Slept under the stars. Played in the tidal zone where the pace is set by crabs and tides. Hammocked. Journaled. Hiked. Laughed. Ate like royalty.

The goal isn’t just getting kids outside. It’s helping them discover that nature is always there when they need it. Even in short, salty weekend getaways.

Because of the generosity of our members, Hearty Roots received $16,533 to continue strengthening our community and supporting those they serve.

Every meeting reminds us that meaningful change doesn't require a huge commitment—it just takes people who care. In just one hour, our members come together to learn about local nonprofits, vote, and make a lasting impact across Lincoln County.

Our hearts are full after an unforgettable evening surrounded by an incredible community that believes in giving kids the chance to thrive before they reach a crisis.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, to the amazing team at Applecroft Catering for a wood-fired delightful meal, and to Soggy Po Boys for keeping the dance floor alive. Most of all, thank you to every guest who showed up because you believe in our mission of swimming upstream—building belonging, resilience, and meaningful adventure for local kids in the outdoors.

This campus isn’t just about cabins, trails, or site plans. It’s about creating a place where young people can heal, connect, discover who they are, and experience the kind of adventure that changes lives. The infrastructure we’re building makes that possible for generations of kids.

Because of your generosity, we’re now just $25,000 away from unlocking $150,000 in matching funds and grants that will bring this vision to life.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for young people is also the simplest. A few tents. A campfire. Canoes. Fresh air. No notifications. No pressure. Just a weekend outside.

Hearty Roots partnered with Midcoast Youth Center to get their awesome Waypoint mentoring crew off the grid and into the woods. That’s the beauty of collaboration—we get to build on the strong relationships they already have (in this case with the rad Ethan, Waypoint Manager) and add a little wilderness to the mix. They’ll head back to their stomping grounds and skate park at MYC sun-kissed and with a little dirt under their fingernails.

Nature doesn’t have to be complicated to be restorative. Sometimes a tent and a trusted community are enough.
