Damariscotta Historical Society Needs Your Help!

The Damariscotta Historical Society is searching for the oldest resident of Damariscotta (must currently be residing in the town of Damariscotta) for the organization to bestow the Boston Post Cane providing recognition of reaching such a milestone.

The Boston Post Cane tradition began in 1909 to honor the oldest residents of New England towns. The Boston Post newspaper's publisher, Edwin Grazier, established the tradition to increase circulation.

Records show that Damariscotta has had 17 holders of the cane. The Damariscotta Historical Society is asking the community for help with finding that individual. There will be a ceremony where the original cane would be presented and a replica of the original would be given to the recipient to hold. The original will be on display at the Damariscotta Historical Society located at 3 Chapman Street in Damariscotta. If you have information, please send an email to [email protected].
