Living Windows
by Ron C. Nischwitz Sr.
6-17-26

Every Mason is a window through which the world beholds Freemasonry...
Through that window...
the world does not see our rituals...
or our sacred signs...
it sees us...
Our conduct becomes their understanding of Freemasonry...
Our character becomes their measure of its worth...
So each of us must ask...
What view does the world see through me...
A man cannot hide the parts of his life that cast shadows on the Light...
A stained window does not conceal its blemishes...
it merely distorts the Light passing through it...
Thus the work of a Mason is not to cover his faults...
but to transform them...
to polish the glass...
to refine the life...
to let the Light shine more clearly...
And this duty extends beyond ourselves...
It reaches to our Brothers...
If a Brother’s window becomes clouded or tarnished...
the answer is not to remove it at the first sign of imperfection...
The Craft teaches a higher obligation...
to polish...
to restore...
to uplift before we ever consider removing...
For the labor of Brotherly Love is not abandonment...
it is restoration...
A Lodge is not a museum of perfect windows...
but a workshop where imperfect ones are made clear again...
Yet the Craft is also wise...
It knows that not every window can be restored...
Some refuse the cloth...
Some resist the Light...
Some will not be polished...
no matter how patient the hands that try...
And so...
after all the labor has been faithfully applied...
after counsel...
compassion...
correction...
and care...
if the window cannot or will not be refined...
then it must be gently removed...
not in anger...
not in judgment...
but in solemn recognition that the Temple must remain filled with Light...
Only then can space be made for another window through which the world may see the Craft more clearly...
Freemasonry does not ask for perfection...
It asks for progress...
for sincerity...
for the steady shaping of a life worthy of the Great Architect...
When a man lives with integrity...
humility...
and purpose...
the world sees Light through him...
And when he falters...
he rises...
improves...
and continues the Work...
And when a Brother falters...
we stand beside him...
cloth in hand...
helping him polish the window of his life...
until it shines again...
For the world will judge Freemasonry...
not by its symbols...
nor by its ceremonies...
but by the lives of the men who bear its name...
So let your life be a clear window...
one through which the world sees honor...
kindness...
discipline...
and the quiet strength of a man who is building himself into something worthy of the Craft...
Live so that when others look at you...
they see Freemasonry at its best.

Samuel C**t changed the world with a simple observation.

While working aboard a ship, he noticed the operation of a capstan—a rotating mechanism used to raise anchors. As it turned and locked into position, an idea struck him: what if a firearm could use the same principle?

That insight led to the C**t revolver, one of the most influential firearm designs in history.

More importantly, C**t's revolving-cylinder mechanism demonstrated that a firearm could fire multiple rounds without reloading after every shot. That breakthrough helped usher in the age of repeating fi****ms, setting the stage for later innovations such as lever-action rifles, repeating carbines, and eventually machine guns.

One of those later innovators was Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling.

Unlike C**t, Gatling was a physician. During the American Civil War, he observed that disease often killed more soldiers than combat itself. He became convinced that if one man could do the work of many soldiers, fewer men would need to be sent into battle.

His solution was the Gatling Gun, the first successful rapid-fire machine gun.

Whether history proved his theory correct is open to debate. What is certain is that his invention transformed warfare and left a lasting mark on military technology.

Two Freemasons. One inspired by a ship's capstan. One a doctor seeking a solution to the horrors of war. Together, they helped shape the evolution of fi****ms from the revolver to the machine gun.
