Dalton Massachusetts Beautification Commission

Dalton Massachusetts Beautification Commission The Dalton Beautification Commission volunteers designs and maintains a number of flower gardens and planters along Main Street. No experience necessary.

The Dalton Beautification Commission, a small, grassroots, volunteer organization has the goal of improving the quality of life in the community by bringing the beauty of nature into the streetscape of Dalton. We design, plant and maintain the Bridge Baskets, Library Planters and Traffic Island gardens in Dalton. During the growing season, we meet each Tuesday morning at the Dalton Methodist churc

h to tend the gardens. This is a social work session filled with fun and camaraderie. Other days during the week, people volunteer to look after bridge baskets and library planters and water as needed. It is very gratifying to plant the flowers, and nurture them encouraging them to develop into colorful gardens that are enjoyed by the community. We are always looking for people to join our multigenerational group. We have been away for a while and we were struck as to how nice the fall gardens looked as we traveled through town on our arrival. The volunteers have done a wonderful job extending the beauty of the gardens. Thank you all for your efforts.

The faces of most of our volunteers who work so hard but have so much fun maintaining the gardens.

Our September meeting was a wonderful get together. We had a nice luncheon prior to conducting our meeting. Lots of laughs and camaraderie.

We can accomplish a lot with full bellies.

Thank You Jean for hosting the event on a rainy day.

The volunteers dead head the baskets twice a week which stimulates the growth of new blossoms. The baskets need lots of water (even when it's been so wet). They are fertilized frequently because the water leaches out the nutrients.

We did battle aphids in early August and only one of the 8 baskets was severely affected.

In spite of early setbacks where the baskets were vandalized the Bridge Baskets have done well thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and the support from donations.

The Appalachian Trail hikers always seem to comment on how nice the Bridge Baskets and flower gardens look. They've said that word on the trail is that Dalton is a nice place to visit.
