*Update: the rain made the flags too wet, so we are going to try again tomorrow at 8:00am.
Thank you!

A big thank you to all who helped us with setting up the Flags at the Dallas Cemetery for the Avenue of Flags! For those that can help we will be taking down the flags and poles on Thursday at 8:00am at the Dallas Cemetery.
We could also use some help with folding the flags, up at the Cemetery Maintenance building at 10:00am. We will have tables setup, and totes ready for the flags to go into. Thank you all!

F-15 Fighter Jet Flyovers to Honor Memorial Day in Dallas and Salem

This Memorial Day, Dallas and Salem residents will have the chance to witness a powerful tribute from the skies. F-15 Eagle fighter jets from the Oregon Air National Guard will perform flyovers as part of ceremonies honoring fallen service members across the region.

The jets are scheduled to pass over Dallas Cemetery at approximately 10:55 a.m. and Restlawn Memory Gardens in Salem at approximately 10:58 a.m. on Monday, May 26.

The aircraft will fly at about 1,000 feet above ground level and at speeds around 400 mph. These flyovers are part of a broader series of appearances at cemeteries and memorial parks throughout northwest Oregon and southwest Washington.

F-15 Jet flyover scheduled for Dallas about 10:00am on Memorial Day.

In April 1967, U.S. Navy sailor Doug Hegdahl was knocked off of the USS Canberra in the Gulf of Tonkin by a blast from the ship's massive guns. He floated in the water for 12 hours before local fishermen found him, who then turned him over to North Vietnamese troops. Hegdahl decided to play dumb, and when his captors asked him to write an anti-war statement against the United States, he eagerly agreed — and then pretended to be illiterate. He also failed to follow simple commands, and soon the North Vietnamese dubbed him "the incredibly stupid one" and tasked him with sweeping the grounds of the Hỏa Lò prison camp.

Hegdahl used this privilege to secretly spread communications and sabotage the North Vietnamese by filling the gas tanks of five military trucks with sand and leaves, rendering them inoperable. He also memorized the names of 256 fellow POWs by singing them to the tune of "Old McDonald." When he was released in 1969, he was able to share these names with U.S. military officials, revealing that 63 troops previously believed to be MIA were still alive. The information Hegdahl provided also revealed the grim conditions of the prison camps, putting international pressure on North Vietnam to stop torturing their captives.

The American Legion started our local Avenue of Flags in 1991. We started with a little over 60 flags. We now have close to 850 flags to put out. We depend on volunteers to put this event together. We are blessed each year with several organizations that help us, asking for nothing in return. We also receive help from the community as several individuals give up some of their time to help us put up the flags and poles, then again when we take them down, fold and put them away. We couldn't do this without our awesome community.

If you would like to help us this year, you can message us here or show up at the Dallas Cemetery on the following dates and times. Thank you!!!

Weds 22 May 2025 @ 8:00am: Load flag poles on trailer's and place the poles by the
flagpole base holes in preparation for Thursday.

Thur 23 May 2025 @ 8:00am: Put flags on the poles and insert in the base holes.

Thur 29 May 2025 @ 8:00am: Take down the flags & poles. Fold flags & store in totes.
Poles loaded on trailer's and unloaded at the shop.
*Subject to change depending on weather. Must be
dry to fold flags.
