You've put in the work on your college applications. Before you hit submit, give everything one more careful review.

Check that you've answered every required question, uploaded the correct documents, and reviewed your essays for spelling, grammar, and clarity. Another good idea is to confirm that names, dates, and other important details are accurate.

Ask a parent, teacher, counselor, or another trusted adult to also take a look. A fresh set of eyes may catch something you overlooked.

Parents and caregivers: Offer to proofread, but let your scholar's voice remain their own, especially when it comes to personal essays.

Taking a little extra time to review your application can help you submit with confidence!

Scholars, college application season is here! 🎓

If you're planning to apply to college, one of the best things you can do now is to get organized. Application requirements and deadlines can vary from school to school, so creating a plan can help you stay on track.

Begin by making a list of the colleges you're considering and note important dates for applications, financial aid, and scholarships. Then, keep notice of what each application requires, such as transcripts, essays, and letters of recommendation.

Parents and caregivers: You can help by reviewing deadlines together and encouraging your scholar to break larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps.

A little planning now can help you feel more confident this application season!

Thinking about college? This is the perfect week to apply! 📝

October 12–18, 2026 is Texas Free College Application Week. This gives eligible Texas students the opportunity to apply to participating colleges and universities without paying an application fee.

Before you apply, take the time to explore participating schools, review their admission requirements, and make sure you have everything you need to complete your applications.

Parents and caregivers: This is a great time to check in with your student about the schools they're considering and help them keep track of everything they need to submit.

No application fee can make it easier to consider more possibilities for what comes next. Take advantage of the week and get those applications in!

The cost of pursuing an education goes far beyond tuition.

Books, supplies, housing, meals, and other expenses add up quickly for students on track to earn their degree. In fact, the average estimated cost for students attending college in Texas ranges from $20,000 – $30,000 annually. According to NPR, college tuition has essentially doubled over the past 30 years.

Through scholarships for eligible DHA residents, the Opportunity Rising foundation helps ease some of that financial burden so students can keep moving toward their educational goals. For the past 30 years, we have awarded 1,385 scholarships and internships worth $2,061,518, which have supported students attending colleges all over the country.

From September 15 – October 15, we honor and celebrate the contributions, history, and culture of the Hispanic and Latino community— and the scholars that are building on that legacy through their educational endeavors.

At this year’s Opportunity Rising Scholarship Ceremony, we celebrated our scholars, their accomplishments, and the people who help make their educational journeys possible.

The event was a reminder of what can happen when students are supported with resources, encouragement, and opportunities to succeed.

For more than 30 years, Opportunity Rising has awarded over $1.9 million in scholarships through employee contributions, grants, and corporate donors, helping students pursue their goals and build brighter futures.

There’s something special about seeing an investment in education come full circle.

When its doors first opened in 2011, Dallas ISD’s Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA) welcomed Ontario Brown as one of its first students. After graduating, Ontario obtained a scholarship from Opportunity Rising to help him continue his education and earn his college degree from Texas Christian University.

Today, he’s returned to BOMLA as a teacher, helping cultivate leadership and building opportunities for a new generation of students.

Recently interviewed by CBS News Texas, Ontario shares that his experiences as a BOMLA student has shaped his teaching philosophy and the impact he’s now making in the classroom. We could not be prouder to see an Opportunity Rising scholar using his education and experience to make a difference in the community that helped make him be the leader and professional he is today.

What is important to me and what am I passionate about?

What does success look like to me this school year? Is it getting better grades? Or maybe learning a new skill?
