History of Kiest Conservation Area

Topic: History of Kiest Park and KCA with a Walking Tour
When: Saturday, October 10th, 10:00 am - noon
Where: KCA outdoor classroom, 3238 S Hampton Rd. 75224 Presenters: David Klempin, talk - Roger Bolen, docent/tour guide Cost: Free and open to the public

Please join us for an insightful presentation and trail walk at the Kiest Conservation Area October 10, at 10 am. Learn all about Edwin Kiests' generous donation to the city of Dallas and the work by the WPA program employees in developing the Conservation Area. David Klempin, architect, preservationist and historian, will present a program on the history of the KCA and Kiest Park. That will be followed by a trail walk lead by Roger Bolen, Friends of Oak Cliff Parks' Naturalist and KCA specialist. The walk will pass the sites where two WPA bridges once spanned the gulley that bisects the park, ruins where comfort stations and picnic areas once stood, and the meadow, where well over 160 species of Blackland Prairie wildflowers and grasses have been identified.

Overnight, the Moon will flush shades of copper, rust, and crimson as it passes through Earth's shadow during a deep partial lunar eclipse.

While this eclipse falls just short of totality, the view could be striking. At maximum eclipse, 96.3% of the Moon will be immersed in Earth’s umbra, its dark central shadow, creating a scene that closely resembles a total lunar eclipse: a darkened Moon glowing shades of red and copper against the night sky, with only a narrow sliver remaining brightly lit.
