Meng Ren played one final DJ set in Beijing at an underground show the day before her flight left for Dallas. She was headed to Denton to pursue her doctorate in ethnomusicology from the UNT College of Music.

"Ethnomusicology is studying music as an insider," Meng says.

Meng created “Forbidden Sound” – a visual accompaniment to her written piece about the underground world of hip-hop in China. The documentary features in-depth interviews providing insight into a complicated and controversial scene.

As she finishes her Ph.D., Meng continues learning more about cultures through sounds, even teaching a class on the topic.
