This year marks the 53rd anniversary of the tragic death of 12-year-old Santos Rodriguez, who was killed while handcuffed inside a police car, on July 24, 1973, by a Dallas police officer.

We invite members of civil society, local government leaders, and the private sector to join us in reflecting on his life, his legacy, and the lasting impact of this loss on our community.

The evening’s program will include a panel discussion, a performance, and an opportunity for community members to share how this event has shaped their lives and our city’s history. Together, we will honor Santos’s memory and reaffirm our commitment to justice, healing, and unity.

In Defense of Librarians

Since I was a child, I have looked at librarians as the kindest and wisest people I’ve known—patient guides who opened doors to knowledge, imagination, and understanding. Today, that legacy is under attack. In some parts of the country, Texas and Florida for example, librarians are being harassed and falsely labeled “groomers” for doing precisely what their profession demands: providing access to information and defending the freedom to read.

These attacks are not random. They are part of a broader effort to intimidate educators, censor ideas, and restrict access to knowledge—especially for marginalized communities. Librarians do not indoctrinate; they empower. As the saying goes, “Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.” That discernment, rooted in professional ethics and public service, is essential to a healthy democracy.

At Human Rights Dallas, we have seen firsthand the vital role libraries play in civic life. In our first year of operation, we proudly hosted more than a dozen free, public programs at the Dallas Central Library—programs that brought people together to learn, reflect, and engage in dialogue. These events were met with curiosity, respect, and community enthusiasm. We are looking forward to strengthening our relationship with the DCL in 2026. Please stay tuned.

When librarians are attacked, the public’s right to information is threatened. Defending libraries and those who serve them is not just cultural—it is a human rights imperative.
