Our first film. Our first film festival premiere. 💜🎬

We’re excited to share that FWD, the first documentary produced by Dementia Care Warriors, will make its film festival premiere this week at the 2026 BlackDoctor Film Festival in Washington, D.C.!

As a small nonprofit with an even smaller team, having FWD reach a national audience is a big deal for us. This opportunity brings the voices and experiences of dementia family caregivers to more people—and we’re honored to help bring their stories to the screen.

To the caregivers and families who trusted us with their stories: thank you for letting the world see your love, your challenges, and your lives beyond the caregiving role. 24 hours before my mom’s 79th birthday, I decided to throw her a party. 🤪🎉

I had gone back and forth about it.

She doesn’t know it’s her birthday. She may not understand why everyone is here or even know who they are. And if I’m being completely transparent, I was TIRED.

And even as I was having those thoughts, I knew better.

I tell caregivers all the time: just because someone living with dementia may not understand the moment doesn’t mean they can’t feel the moment. The joy. The love. The energy of being surrounded by people who care about them.

But knowing something and having the energy to actually DO something are two different things. 😜

I didn’t have a sitter, so I couldn’t run around to stores preparing. If this party was happening, I had to figure out how to make it happen from the house.

Challenge accepted.

Amazon got hit first: two outfit options, shoes and decorations. Because obviously the birthday girl needed options. 💅🏾

Then Sam’s: pinwheels, fruit, dips, chicken salad, Hawaiian rolls and sangria. 🍷

And last but certainly not least…CAKE. Nothing Bundt Cakes to the rescue.

I made a cute little invitation, texted a few close family and friends and voilà…

24 hours later, we had a PARTY. 💃🏾

My mama slept through some of it. 😂 She may not have understood that everyone was there to celebrate her birthday.

But she smiled. She laughed. She was surrounded by people who love her.

And our house had something caregiving can sometimes quietly take away—life in it.

People coming and going. Food. Music. Conversation. Laughter. Energy.

I’m so glad I did it.

Dementia has already changed so much about how we experience life together. I don’t want it to convince me that the moments she may not understand aren’t still worth having.

She may not remember her 79th birthday.

But she got to experience the love of it.

And I got another memory with my mama. 💜

Learning, connection, and finally making an online connection a real-life meetup! 💜

DCW was proud to join NPRA for the Dallas Dementia Symposium with Carrie Aalberts, Dementia Educator | Carrie Aalberts . Our Founder and CEO, Veronica Shanklin, served on the planning committee and joined a panel that brought clinical expertise and caregiver lived experience together for a thoughtful conversation about dementia and the everyday realities of care.

A highlight? Finally meeting Carrie in person after years of following her work, connecting online and a virtual conversation through her podcast. That hug was overdue and her expertise, compassion for caregivers and infectious energy is just the same in person. 🤗

To the family and professional caregivers who joined us: thank you for making time to learn, ask questions, and connect.

Caregiving doesn’t come with a handbook, but opportunities like this help put more knowledge and support within reach.

November 1 has become more than a date on our calendar. It’s a tradition. 💜

For the past three years, we’ve gathered on this day to begin National Family Caregivers Month by celebrating the people at the heart of our work: dementia family caregivers.

Behind every portrait is a real caregiver, a real relationship and a story that deserves to be seen. These are members of our community—and this day is about celebrating them.

Faces of Care Warriors is our way of saying: We see you. Your story matters. And you deserve to be celebrated, too.

This November 1, the tradition continues with our 4th Annual Faces of Care Warriors Sunday Jazz Brunch.

Join us for brunch, live entertainment, unlimited mimosas and the unveiling of our 2026 caregiver portraits—all in support of DCW’s education, respite scholarships and ongoing caregiver community.
