Families Out Loud is celebrating International Pronouns Day and inclusivity because respect lives in the details, and in family building, the details are often found in the paperwork.
Before the first appointment, the first contract, and the first signature, intended parents are asked to fit their family into boxes. Mother. Father. Husband. Wife. For two dads, a solo parent, co-parents, trans and nonbinary parents, and families built through IVF, surrogacy, and donor conception, those boxes can turn a joyful step into yet another explanation nobody should owe.
Chosen names and pronouns belong on intake forms. Parent 1 and Parent 2 belong on parent fields. Medical records, legal contracts, donor agreements, surrogacy agreements, and birth paperwork should name every intended parent accurately the first time, with no correction, no penciled-in arrows or footnotes.
