A rainbow baby is the baby who comes next. A family loses a pregnancy or loses a baby. Later, they try again, and a child is born. That child is the rainbow baby.

Just like a rainbow, the baby comes after the storm of loss and grief. But they happen in the same sky.

A rainbow baby is not a replacement. Not a fix. Not a reason the grief should be finished by now.

Today exists to do three things:
🌈 To celebrate the rainbow babies.
🕊️ To remember the babies who came before them.
🎢 To honor each parent’s journey, all of it, the loss and the waiting and the trying again.

If you are still on your journey, today is yours too. The trying again after you swore you could not survive it another time. The appointments you cannot bring yourself to watch the screen during. The joy you are almost afraid to feel.

This time, they came for our families. 🫂

On August 6, the White House signed two executive orders. Here’s what you need to know:

    •   ⚖️ One order directs federal agencies to deny citizenship documents to babies born in the U.S. to two noncitizen parents, and it explicitly names children born through “a commercial transaction with a surrogate.”

    •    🪪 The second expands visa denials for anyone suspected of traveling here to give birth.

Our response? We are angry. We are disappointed. We are disgusted. Our children are not “transactions.” Surrogacy is medicine, generosity, and love.

    •    📜 But an order is not the Constitution. Five weeks ago the Supreme Court reaffirmed birthright citizenship, 6-3. The 2025 order never survived a single courtroom. This fight is just beginning.

    •    📞 To intended parents everywhere: your path is still open. Don’t make panic decisions. Talk to a fertility attorney early, in the U.S. and at home. Keep every document.

    •    ♥️ And remember: “impossible” has lost to us before. Louise Brown just turned 48. Every generation of our community was told no. Every generation built families anyway.

Happy World IVF Day! On July 25, 1978, one baby girl made “impossible” lose the argument. Forty-eight years and more than 12 million babies later, IVF is still turning hope into families, out loud.

Today Families Out Loud celebrates every part of that story: Louise Brown, our own board member Elizabeth Carr, the doctors and embryologists behind the science, and every parent who kept believing through surrogacy, egg and s***m donation, and every path to parenthood.
