Thousands of people rely on DART every day to get to work, school, medical appointments, and other essential destinations. While recent discussions have focused on which cities will remain part of DART, our Leadership Academy Fellows learned firsthand why public transportation is such an important public policy issue.

Key insights from our session:
🚊Transit-oriented development near DART stations has generated $18.1 billion in direct economic impact over the past 25 years.
🚊DART operates one of the nation's longest light rail systems, spanning 93 miles across 13 member cities.
🚊The newly launched DART Silver Line is the first public transit service in the U.S. to provide direct connections to three airports.

Hearing directly from leaders who manage complex regional transportation systems challenged our fellows to think more deeply about infrastructure, economic development, equity, and what it takes to keep a region as large and dynamic as DFW connected.

Thank you to Jeamy Molina, Executive Vice President & Chief Communications Officer at Dallas Area Rapid Transit, for sharing your insights and joining us for this important conversation.

Her journey — from undocumented child, to bilingual educator and labor leader, to now State Representative-Elect — reflects her lifelong belief that every Texan deserves a fair shot. Austin is gaining a passionate advocate for public education, working families, and opportunity for all.

Please SHARE and join us in congratulating Representative-Elect Montserrat Garibay! 🎉

What does healthcare access look like in North Texas? Leadership Academy participants got an inside look during a conversation with Edna Ruano of Parkland Hospital and the discussion highlighted how many families are navigating gaps in care every day.

Here are a few key takeaways:

➡️Younger and lower-income adults are turning to AI for health advice due to lack of access to care.
➡️1 in 6 Texans has no health insurance
➡️1 in 4 relies on Medicare or Medicaid
➡️Hospital costs are rising faster than inflation, adding pressure across the system
➡️Parkland provides $1.4B in uncompensated care annually

The country saw images of 5-year-old Liam Ramos, a preschooler wearing a blue bunny hat and backpack, who was detained and received orders for deportation. This is far from an isolated incident, as there are thousands of children like Liam being held in detention.

Immigration attorney and former ICE official Dan Gividen shared with Leadership Academy fellows that:

❗️Tax-paying individuals with no criminal record are being targeted for detention.
❗️The vast majority of those placed under deportation are individuals who voluntarily show up for their ICE check-ins.
❗️Thousands of children like Liam are in detention centers across the country, with poor access to medical care and sufficient legal counsel.
❗️The Texas workforce is comprised of a significant foreign-born population. Current sweeps and raids, including those affecting lawfully present individuals, are also impacting the economy.
