🩸 SICKLE CELL FACT OF THE DAY: PROTECT YOUR LUNGS ❤️

Sickle cell disease can affect more than your blood—it can affect your lungs and breathing, too.

One serious complication is Acute Chest Syndrome (ACS). ACS affects the lungs and can interfere with the body’s ability to get enough oxygen. It can become serious quickly and requires prompt medical attention.

🚨 KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS:

🫁 Chest pain
🌡️ Fever
🫁 Cough
💨 Shortness of breath
⚠️ Difficulty breathing

Acute Chest Syndrome can have different triggers, including lung infections and processes related to sickle cell disease that affect the lungs and blood flow.

For someone living with sickle cell disease, new or worsening chest pain or trouble breathing should NEVER be ignored.

🩸 SICKLE CELL FACT OF THE DAY: YOUR BONES & JOINTS MATTER ❤️

Sickle cell disease can affect more than your blood—it can affect your bones and joints, too.

When bone tissue doesn’t receive enough oxygen-rich blood, serious complications can develop. One of those complications is avascular necrosis (AVN), which occurs when reduced blood supply causes bone tissue to become damaged.

AVN can particularly affect areas such as the hips and shoulders, potentially affecting mobility and quality of life.

⚠️ LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.

Watch for symptoms such as:

• Persistent hip, groin, thigh, or shoulder pain
• Pain that worsens with activity
• Joint stiffness
• Difficulty walking or moving the affected joint
• New or worsening bone or joint pain

Sickle cell can also be associated with chronic bone and joint pain and an increased risk of bone infections such as osteomyelitis.

If pain is new, persistent, or getting worse, talk with your healthcare provider.

🩸 SICKLE CELL FACT OF THE DAY: SICKLE CELL HAS MANY FACES 🌎

Did you know sickle cell disease does not affect only one race or nationality?

Sickle cell disease is an inherited genetic blood disorder found in people from many racial, ethnic, and ancestral backgrounds around the world.

It is more common among people with ancestry from regions including Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and South Asia.

That means people of African/African American, Caribbean, Hispanic/Latino, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian ancestry can all be affected.

❤️ You cannot tell who carries a sickle cell gene simply by looking at them.

A blood test can determine whether a person has sickle cell disease or carries sickle cell trait.

🌎 Different backgrounds. One sickle cell community.
Many cultures. Many stories. ONE HOPE.

Did you know that sickle cell disease can affect the kidneys?

Your kidneys work every day to filter waste and extra fluid from your blood. In people living with sickle cell disease, changes in blood flow and other effects of the disease can damage the kidneys over time and affect how well they function.

One possible early warning sign is protein in the urine—and kidney problems may begin before noticeable symptoms appear.

That’s why routine monitoring is so important. ❤️

🩸 Regular medical checkups

Talk with your healthcare provider about the kidney screening schedule that's appropriate for you.

Did you know that sickle cell disease can affect your eyes and vision?

Sickled red blood cells can interfere with blood flow through the tiny blood vessels that supply the retina. This can lead to a complication known as sickle cell retinopathy, which can threaten vision as it progresses.

One of the most important things to know is that eye problems can sometimes develop before noticeable changes in vision occur. That’s why regular comprehensive eye examinations are an important part of caring for your overall health.

Early detection matters. Regular eye care can help identify problems sooner and give your healthcare team an opportunity to manage complications.

❤️ SICKLE CELL FACT OF THE DAY

Did you know the spleen plays an important role in protecting your body from certain infections?

For people living with sickle cell disease, sickled red blood cells can affect blood flow in the spleen and damage it over time. This can cause the spleen to lose some or all of its normal function, making it harder for the body to fight certain serious infections.

But PREVENTIVE CARE MATTERS! ❤️

Recommended vaccinations, regular medical care, and preventive antibiotics for some young children can provide important protection.

The more we understand about sickle cell disease, the better we can advocate for Warriors and their families.

🩸 HAPPY SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH! ❤️

Did you know that people living with sickle cell disease can have an increased risk of serious infections—especially infants and children?

Sickle cell disease can affect how well the spleen protects the body from certain infections. When the spleen becomes damaged or doesn't function as well, it can be harder for the body to fight certain bacteria and other germs.

That makes prevention especially important. ❤️

Staying current with recommended vaccinations, keeping regular medical checkups, and seeking prompt medical care when signs of infection appear are important parts of sickle cell care.

Our warriors deserve every opportunity for healthy, bright futures.

Today, Kier’s Hope Foundation pauses to remember September 11, 2001. 🇺🇸

We honor the 2,977 lives lost, the survivors, the courageous first responders, and the families whose lives were forever changed.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember the courage, compassion, sacrifice, and unity shown on that day and in the days that followed.

As we observe Sickle Cell Awareness Month this September, we are reminded that compassion for one another matters. Every person carries a story. Every family faces challenges we may not see. And every act of awareness, support, and kindness can make a difference.

Today, we remember those we lost.
We honor those who served.
We stand with those who survived.
And we continue to spread hope.
