Happy New Year 2024!
The Texas National Tae Kwon Do Federation was formed in the 1970s by Grand Master Preston D. Hale, Jr. It was his dream to have a federation that would allow him to spread wisdom and knowledge to its members and their schools. Over the years, there were thousands of students that owe some part of their growth - physical, mental, character, and spiritual - to Grand Master Hale. He trained hundreds of students and promoted many black belts in his 50+ years in the martial arts. He gave of himself for the benefit of others. He was never in it for personal gain. He was truly a servant. When he passed in March of 2019, we lost our Grand Master, mentor, and friend.
The current and former members of the Federation, and Grand Master Hale, knew that he was the glue to this Federation. Prior to passing, he asked Grand Master Herbert Hooks to take his place as the Grand Master of the Federation. Grand Master Hooks did not ask for the position, but because his Grand Master asked him, he accepted the honor and responsibility knowing no one could fill the void that would occur when Grand Master Hale passed away. This would most likely mean that Grand Master Hooks would be tasked to guide the Federation to its final destiny.
The Board of Directors of the Texas National Tae Kwon Do Federation met on Sunday, November 5, 2023 to discuss the future of the Federation. The Board unanimously decided to cease operations. In doing so, a decision was made to donate all remaining funds of the Foundation to one of Grand Master Hale's cherished charities. The monies would be donated, in the name of Grand Master Preston D. (Dan) Hale, Jr., and with the blessing of Mrs. Hale, to Nativity of Our Lord Orthodox Monastery in Kemp, Texas.
On Friday, December 8, 2023, Grand Master Hooks, Marilu Pena and I travelled to the monastery and met with Mother Barbara and several of the nuns at the monastery. They prepared a delicious lunch for us. We presented a check in the name of Grand Master Hale to Mother Barbara.
It was a bittersweet moment for us all. However, I was the most fitting way to honor Grand Master Hale.
David Fitzgerald, President
Texas National Tae Kwon Do Federation
Below is a personal message from Grand Master Hooks:
"I want to let you know that we’ve discontinued the TNTKDF. We all know and knew that what was left of the federation went away with Mr. Hale. We’re in another era now. Things are not the same. There was really not enough interest nor has been enough interest for years now. Pat G., John R., David F. (President), Marilu (Treasurer), and myself with Mrs. Hale’s support, met and decided that this was best for all concerned.
The federation funding was donated to Mr. Hale’s favorite monastery out in Kemp, Tx. We personally delivered the donation in Mr. Hale’s name to the care of Mother Barbara / Nativity Monastery and her fellow sisters out in Kemp. However, the federation name and legacy will continue with us attending various test and events as in the past. The legacy is still alive…You all have played an integral role and have history in the federation over the years. Regardless, as to what has happened though out the years, your presence was always recognized and respected. Therefore, it’s important not only to me but all associated with us as a whole to be informed and be acknowledged going forward."
