Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute The Meadows Institute is dedicated to accelerating access to mental healthcare for everyone who needs it.

Mental health issues impact every Texan, if not directly then economically. The Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute launched to identify and encourage implementation of improved mental health policies and practices in our state. More importantly, the Institute hopes to remove the stigma associated with mental illness and enable Texans to get help when and where they need it.

As National Hispanic Heritage Month comes to an end, our Paso del Norte Center team reflects on the powerful role that community has in mental health and emotional well-being.

“Children, youth, and young adults with complex health needs shaped by grief and trauma deserve nurturing options supported by well-trained professionals who can provide care and guidance,” says Josue Lachica, assistant director of the Paso del Norte Center. “Through the trust and collaboration built across regional consortia, partners in the Paso del Norte region are making lasting improvements to address these challenges and help young people stay connected to support close to home.”

Together, we can build stronger communities where everyone can thrive.

What's next for Minding College Minds®? 🎓

As we wrap up Phase 1, we are excited to share our roadmap for Phase 2. We are deepening our commitment to student mental health across campuses through a three-pronged approach:

🔹 Building the evidence base to link mental health and student success
🔹 Expanding our impact by partnering with the Aspen Institute to help colleges incorporate belonging, meaning-making, wellbeing, and purpose into the Minding College Minds® Framework's Universal Supports
🔹 Launching the Minding College Minds® Action Network where colleges can share insights, collaborate, or support one another

Thanks to the generous continued support of the Texas Pioneer Foundation, Trellis Foundation, and the Greater Texas Foundation, together with higher education leaders, we are building stronger systems of support for the next generation.

October is National Depression Awareness Month — a time to spotlight the invisible gaps in mental healthcare.

In Texas, conditions like depression are too often not identified or treated until symptoms become severe. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 246 of 254 Texas counties are designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas, leaving countless individuals without access to timely care.

Dr. Roshni Koli, chief medical officer at the Meadows Institute, emphasizes that closing the average eight-year delay in treatment starts with meeting people where they already are. By integrating collaborative care into primary care clinics across Texas, health systems can identify depression early, track progress with real data, and connect patients to care in environments where they already feel comfortable.

The Meadows Institute, in partnership with the Texas Success Center, is thrilled to celebrate the 24 Texas colleges that recently completed the Minding College Minds™ Learning Community!

With the generous support of the Texas Pioneer Foundation, Trellis Foundation, and the Greater Texas Foundation, the institutions in this program shared resources, best practices, and creative solutions — with each college's multidisciplinary team developing a tailored action plan to support student mental health and success.

Following the recent completion of the second cohort, community colleges across both cohorts are now expanding mental health supports and resources for more than 550,000 students statewide. From building universal supports to strengthening crisis response, they are transforming campus culture and making mental health an institutional priority.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are highlighting our regional partnerships that are expanding mental healthcare across the Texas borderland communities.

Through the El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium and other regional organizations, the Meadows Institute’s Paso del Norte Center partners with the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, uniting regional leaders, providers, and stakeholders to help strengthen local crisis care, connect young people to the support they need, and improve coordination between schools and health clinics so families can get help more easily.

By building these cross-sector partnerships on local, regional, national, and international levels across El Paso and surrounding areas, the Paso del Norte Center aligns regional strategies and strengthens behavioral health systems — ensuring people can access care and support where and when they need it most.

Last week, our president and CEO, Andy Keller, joined his fellow members of the CEO Alliance for Mental Health at Peg’s Campus in Hudson, Ohio, for two days of conversation, reflection, and connection.

The CEO Alliance is made up of the fifteen leading organizations in the United States dedicated to improving the lives of people living with mental health, and the retreat focused on building relationships, exchanging ideas, and collaborating on the critical work ahead.

We are deeply grateful for the commitment of all member organizations in activating their Unified Vision and driving meaningful change together.

As we come to the close of National Su***de Prevention Month, we want to shine a light on an often-overlooked group facing a silent crisis: older adults.

Older adults face the highest su***de rates in the nation — with the highest numbers concentrated among those ages 80 and older. While factors such as grief, social isolation, and physical pain play a role, these tragedies are preventable.

A solution? Moving toward the Collaborative Care Model.

The Meadows Institute supports routine, universal screenings for depression and anxiety at primary care offices. By integrating these simple mental health checkpoints directly into trusted settings, providers can catch the warning signs early and proactively connect individuals to life-saving support.
