Despite weather and travel challenges, bestselling author Ben Macintyre joined Council members last Thursday for an evening about Cold War espionage.

Macintyre shared the true story of Vladimir Kuzichkin, a KGB officer in Tehran who began working with British intelligence in the early 1980s. Drawing on new archives and firsthand interviews from his latest book, "Redwood: The Untold Story of the Cold War’s Most Extraordinary Spy," he described how Kuzichkin operated inside a crumbling regime and how MI6 planned his escape as Soviet and Iranian agents closed in.

Thank you to Ben Macintyre for making the journey and to Lucy and Henry Billingsley for sponsoring.

Diana Liebmann, Jeffrey Moerdler, and Haynes Strader spoke to a full house about the growing strain AI is placing on the world's power grid.

The speakers acknowledged the real risks data centers pose to energy and water resources, while also addressing common misconceptions about them. They emphasized that nearly every internet-based tool we use each day, from email to streaming, depends on these facilities. The discussion also explored how communities and nations might balance AI's growth with the limits of existing infrastructure.

Earlier in the day, Liebmann and Moerdler joined the Council's young professionals for a fireside chat on the same themes. We are so grateful to them for sharing their time and insight with the Council's emerging leaders.

Thank you to Haynes Boone for sponsoring.

Jeffrey Engel and David Kramer joined the Council to discuss NATO's future and America's role in the world.

The speakers challenged the idea that the U.S. was isolationist before World War II, noting that the country helped nations recover after World War I. They also discussed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, China-Taiwan tensions, and North Korea, suggesting that how a government treats its people often signals how it will act in diplomacy.

NATO was a central theme. The speakers described the alliance as one of the most effective military agreements ever reached and stressed the weight of Article 5, the mutual defense clause. They closed by pointing out that foreign affairs spending is a small share of the federal budget and argued that it helps keep Americans safe.

Last night, Catherine Rampell offered a clear-eyed look at where the American economy stands today and why it can be so hard to read.

She explained that the economy often takes time to catch up with the forces reshaping it. The internet, for example, took years to fully change how we work and spend. The same may prove true of artificial intelligence. Much of today's conversation focuses on the jobs AI could replace, but Rampell noted that far less attention goes to the jobs it will create.

She also spoke about the craft behind her work: finding the story inside the data and making complex topics understandable to a broad audience.

Thank you to George and Lindsay Billingsley, Frost, and SMU Cox School of Business for sponsoring.
