Our mission is to educate, disciple, and develop at risk families to make their dreams a reality, glorify God, and use their gifts to transform their community. We provide sponsorship-based education to students of all ages in Kenya between preschool and undergraduate university. We mentor and disciple community members through the Ndoto Community Church. We start businesses to create jobs, meet community needs, and generate ministry income.

Each school break, we host our students for what we usually call an Extravaganza. This time we dubbed it an “Educavanza” to capture the spirit of what we hoped to achieve: a seamless blend of entertainment and education. We wanted our high school students to have a space to let loose while also leaving with a clearer vision of the leaders they are becoming.

We saw our students step on stage as performers, thinkers, and peers, but throughout, our team was pouring into them. The highlight is always the crowning of the new Mr. and Miss Ndoto for the next year. These two individuals carry a unique responsibility. They help us understand the daily challenges their peers face so that we can tailor our support more effectively. They are the primary blueprint for peer mentorship.

Thus, we are looking not just for confidence or stage presence, we are looking for stewards. We are looking for academic discipline and social integrity, to ensure that the Ndoto spirit remains alive in every interaction.

When schools go on break, our sponsored students come home and our campus is a flurry of activity, especially in discipleship activities. But when they go back to school, our students at Ndoto Academy flood the campus! There’s never a slow day at Ndoto.

When schools closed for the last term break, the final day was marked by a fun recording made by Ndoto alumnus Brian, who works at local radio station Namlolwe. He captured the voices, laughter, and talents of our learners, and this recording was later aired on the station, giving our school the chance to shine. It felt like the entire school family was celebrating together as the listeners were treated to trivia, talent showcases, and lively interactions on our campus. Education is not only about academics, but also nurturing talent, building pride, and amplifying young voices.

When class returned after the monthlong break, the students returned with remarkable energy and enthusiasm. Breaks often pull students away from the rhythm of schoolwork, but coming back is a welcome return to normalcy. The learners were quickly immersed in books, reconnecting with friends, and focused in class.

We’re late in marking the day, but World Autism Awareness Day was back in April, and as special needs ministry has long been close to Ndoto’s heart, we held a comprehensive caregiver training day at Ndoto.

Facilitated by expert guests from several local special needs institutions and our staff, 11 parents from both Ndoto Sponsorship and Ndoto Academy and other members of our team were inspired to better support children by recognizing that caregiving is a collective responsibility.

The parents received foundational and practical knowledge in understanding disabilities, communication approaches, supportive care, referral pathways, and institutional support. Kenya’s educational system is pushing a transition from isolated special schools toward integrated classrooms, meaning that the adaptability of those on the front lines is key. Our program staff and teachers must be professionally equipped to manage a wide spectrum of cognitive and physical needs.

And, while many institutions are still navigating the logistical hurdles of integrating disabilities into their classrooms, Ndoto Academy was able to proactively build its new building with a ramp to the top floor! This is a clear statement to our community that we are ready to welcome diverse learners to our campus!

Salim was first introduced to Ndoto in 2019 as a young man through a friend, who first invited him to come to the church’s youth program. He loved it and became consistent in attending, joined the church’s Sunday services, and even gradually joined the worship team.

In 2021, after completing high school, he faced financial challenges in going to college. With encouragement from his peers, he applied for Ndoto’s sponsorship program. We accepted him, and supported his education from his second year in college until graduation this past December.

After completing his Associate’s Degree in Information Communication Technology, he returned to Ndoto and served as an intern in the IT department and a worship team leader. “I am more than grateful for the support, mentorship, and opportunities Ndoto has given me. It has been instrumental in shaping my journey, providing both educational support and a platform to serve and grow in faith,” he says.

It’s not audit season anymore, and all the accountants breathe a sign of relief. But did you know that our operations in Kenya undergo an audit each year too? A four day onsite audit exercise happened in our offices earlier this year, including a comprehensive review of our financial statements and internal controls. Our internal team worked closely with the auditors, and it wasn’t a rubberstamp process either.

There were robust arguments about the exact accounting of different items even as there was no evidence of any problems. This echoed the annual external statement compilation process performed in the US with CapinCrouse LLP, which results every year in precise adjustments. It may feel very in-the-weeds, but having external accountants dig into books in the US and in Kenya is part of our financial transparency commitment to our donors. Ndoto is above board in all it does.

We're getting closer and closer to the day when students will fill the classrooms of our new schoolbuilding. As they wrap up the last details and prepare for moving day, the Wonder Voyage Legacy team cut ribbons on the school last week and a community dedication celebration is coming soon. Our communications team put togther this moving montage of video from throughout the groundbreaking and construction. We can't stop watching it. Get excited along with us! The building is almost open!

We are in the very final stages of finishing our Ndoto Academy construction, and it's a sight to behold. Michael Omondi is back in Kenya and took a tour of the building in his first days on the ground, and you can see his excitement as he walks the halls and shares his reactions. He's moved to pause and speak about what this building will mean for the community and for the students who will be educated there. We've put together this shorter version of a longer Facebook Live video that he made, and added in some subtitles to help since the audio is not always clear.

It's a long video, but I think if you have the time to watch on your lunch break you'll be blessed by seeing what Ndoto donors have made possible. And we left in the moment where Michael gets a little surprise while touring one of the bathrooms 😅

Pastor Michael, our Kenya Director who moved to the US about a year ago, is back in Kenya for the whole of June to spend time with our staff and help host two groups of visitors. He stopped by some of our new property to show off the latest development - basketball! Ndoto Sports has long featured soccer and boxing, but with our new land the team put up a basketball goal and it's taken off. Now we're hearing words like Taekwondo too! Listen to Michael speak about what sports means to this community.

Our high school graduate mentorship program, Angaza (Shine), continues to bless dozens of young people who are looking to the next steps in their lives. The fourth session took a unique direction when the students stepped out onto a farm to explore the practicalities of modern agribusiness. The session was facilitated by one of our own alumni who is now a thriving entrepreneur. The discussion ranged from integrated agribusiness to the synergies between vegetable cultivation and fish farming, to the practical application of dam liners for year-round production. The also got a hands-on experience with conical gardens as a space-efficient solution for high-yield agriculture.

A highlight of the day was witnessing the multiplier effect of mission in action. Our alumnus, Brian, has succeeded so well that he has more than ten local employees working for him, and during the Angaza session he identified a student with a particular interest in the work and committed himself to mentoring them. Brian is able to provide some pay to students on long holidays so that they have employment and he has hands to grow his business. The support he once received is now being paid forward. This is a powerful testament to the impact of sponsorship when it transforms a beneficiary into a benefactor.
