(DALLAS) — Dallas Park and Recreation Department is actively monitoring the bald eagles at White Rock Lake. To protect the eagle family of five, the department has placed signs near their nest asking visitors to keep noise levels low and dogs on leashes.
This week, the department is installing water barricades near the nesting area. These changes will temporarily affect vehicle access along East Lawther Drive between the playground and the Dreyfuss split. Drivers should expect brief delays, and cyclists should slow down in the area. The playground will close once the barricades are in place. The department will keep the Dreyfuss area, White Rock Trail, and Lake Highlands Drive open for walking and biking.
The eagle family includes three eaglets that are entering a life stage wildlife experts call branching. During this time, it normal to see eaglets on the ground or in low trees while they are learning how to fly, said park officials.
Texas Parks and Wildlife officials said this a sensitive in the young birds’ lives. Young eagles may fall from trees and seem to be in distress while learning to fly. Adult eagles may also act protective. Keeping distance helps avoid problems for the family and park visitors.
Bald eagles are protected by federal law. Dallas Park and Recreation is working with Texas Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to keep the family safe.
