Attention boaters: a new federal boating safety law is effective 1 April, 2021.

The new law requires operators of recreational vessels less than 26 feet to use an engine cutoff switch (ECOS) and the associated link (usually a lanyard) that attaches the operator to the switch. Most recreational boats already have a switch system installed so the new requirement simply obligates boaters to use the safety features already on their boat. The law does not apply if the main helm is in an enclosed cabin or if the vessel is not operating on plane or at displacement speed.
