MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Dear Singers, Patrons, and Friends of Credo:
I so look forward to welcoming singers back into our rehearsal room tomorrow evening! It's not too late to register - link below.
Yesterday, I received an email from a current singer who openly and thoughtfully expressed their concerns about our spring program - "America Sings 250" - in light of "heightened tensions and divisive rhetoric" in our country. I really appreciated their honesty, and I am grateful this person felt comfortable sharing their hesitations with me.
I completely understand why a program that centers on America might give pause in the current climate. That concern is real, and they are not alone in feeling it. I want to be very clear about the spirit and intention behind America Sings, because context truly matters here.
This program is not a response to today’s political moment, nor is it meant to promote any ideology or administration. Rather, it is a broad, reflective celebration of our nation’s 250-year story told through music, poetry, and shared cultural memory. It looks backward as much as it looks forward, drawing from our foundations, our legends, and our collective hopes.
The repertoire includes familiar folk melodies and anthems that have been sung for generations, alongside texts that invite reflection and honesty. Langston Hughes’s 'Let America Be America Again,' written in 1936, is central to the program precisely because it acknowledges both aspiration and struggle. It reminds us that loving a country does not require ignoring its darker chapters. Those moments are part of our history, too, and they cannot be erased. Instead, they help shape our understanding of who we are and who we hope to become.
My hope for America Sings is that it creates space for singers and audiences, regardless of political perspective, to stand together and reflect on a shared story. This is music meant to hold us up, not divide us. It is about people, not politics. About community, memory, and the enduring power of voices raised together.
Your presence in Credo matters - every one of you - and I truly value the care and thought each of you brings into the room. Whatever you decide, please know how grateful I am to stand with you.
