Oak Lawn Library brings after-school fun to Polk Recreation Center

Every other week, children at Polk Recreation Center gather for Library Hour, a program led by Oak Lawn Library staff that brings games, crafts, and hands-on learning directly to students in the center’s after-school program.
Held in Northwest Dallas, the program draws a steady group of 20-45 children every other Tuesday. Students play games, make crafts and build friendships in a lively, engaging environment. With participants ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, the program creates space for children to explore their imagination while learning and having fun.
“Each visit is a little different depending on what we bring,” said Jillian Zinkie, the library public service specialist who coordinates the program. “We try to keep things creative and flexible so kids can participate at their own pace and socialize with their friends.”
Past activities include beading, painting and paper crafts. During a recent Flight Lab, students learned to fold six different paper planes, customize their designs and test them by launching them across the room.
“The kids are always curious about what we’ll bring each time, and they’re usually excited to see us when we arrive,” said Zinkie. “Over time, it’s become a familiar part of their afterschool routine, and we’ve seen consistent participation from many of the same kids.”
Library staff says this program has helped them reach children who may not otherwise visit the library, while also building relationships with local families and recreation center staff.
“This is the beauty behind libraries and other city departments working together,” said Manya Shorr, director of libraries for Dallas Public Library. “It’s about meeting people where they are and building connections.”
