Cyclospora. Salmonella. Now Screwworm. Three Outbreaks, One Summer, One Pattern.

Each traces to the same gap: not enough testing at the source. Agencies are reconstructing outbreaks after people are already sick instead of catching contamination before it ships, and staffing levels aren't the constraint. Whatever the pandemic cost these institutions in public confidence, the way back is unglamorous — inspectors in the field, samples pulled at origin, results published. Basic competence is the only thing that rebuilds trust.

A Senior NIAID Adviser Just Pled Guilty to Hiding COVID Origin Records. He Used a Personal Gmail to Do It.

David Morens admitted in federal court to conspiring to evade FOIA and conceal federal records on coronavirus research grants, routing communications through personal email specifically to keep them out of reach. He also admitted to illegal gratuities. Sentencing is set for November; he faces up to five years. Every FOIA denial that came back empty during those years now reads differently. This is what it took to establish that — an indictment and a plea.

"We Never Open the Windows."

Staff in full hazmat gear, in a sealed room, with an elderly COVID patient breathing the same air back in for days. Ventilation was one of the best-supported interventions of the entire pandemic and one of the least implemented — it's free, it's low-risk, and it was almost entirely absent from protocol. Open a window. Someone had to be a physician and a family member at the same time before that instruction got given.

In November 2020 the WHO Recommended Against Remdesivir. The U.S. Added a Payment Bonus for It.

WHO's guideline panel reviewed the trial data and advised against remdesivir in hospitalized patients, citing no demonstrated effect on mortality or ventilation. American hospitals kept using it — under a reimbursement structure that paid more when they did. Two health authorities looked at overlapping evidence and went opposite directions, and only one of them had a financial incentive attached to the answer. Nobody has ever had to explain that on the record.

Physicians Weren't Debating Ivermectin. They Were Being Reported to Their Boards Over It.

Pharmacies refused to fill. Hospitals refused to administer. Licensing boards opened investigations, and some doctors lost hospital privileges for prescribing an FDA-approved drug within their clinical judgment. Whatever the trial evidence eventually showed, that was never how the question got settled — the profession's own mechanism for resolving disagreement was replaced with discipline. Medicine loses something permanent when a clinical judgment call becomes a licensure matter.

Virologists Warned About This Exact Research in 2015. In Nature. Before Anyone Had Heard of COVID.

When a chimeric SARS-like coronavirus study was published in Nature Medicine, the journal ran the objections alongside it — researchers arguing the risk of creating something more dangerous in the lab wasn't justified by what the work would teach. The debate was in the open literature, five years early. The relevant failure isn't that nobody saw it coming. It's that the field saw it, said so publicly, and the funding continued.

Vaccine-Associated Myocarditis Is on the Label. Biopsy Studies Went Looking for Why.

Post-vaccination myocarditis is a regulator-acknowledged adverse event, concentrated in young males after the second dose — that isn't disputed by anyone. What's less known is that researchers took the next step: endomyocardial biopsies from affected patients in Germany identified vaccine-derived spike protein in cardiac tissue, and a Harvard autopsy series detected vaccine mRNA in heart tissue in some cases. That's the ordinary work of establishing mechanism after a signal is confirmed. It should have been funded aggressively and early.

Cook the Eggs Through. That's the Whole Defense.

In this outbreak the bacteria are inside the egg, not on the shell — which means washing accomplishes nothing and cooking accomplishes everything. Runny yolks, sunny side up, and raw eggs in shakes are where the risk sits. Scramble them firm. And check your carton against the recall codes before you crack anything: this recall covers roughly 19 million eggs across 17 states, with sell-by dates running through mid-August.

They Traced the Outbreak by Asking People Where They Ate. That's Not Inspection.

Testing at the source was thin, so investigators worked backward through interviews and landed on a single restaurant chain as the suspected origin. Tens of thousands of illnesses later, the actual source was a supplier feeding many chains. Source-level testing catches contamination before it ships. Epidemiology catches it after people are already sick. One of those is a food safety system and the other is a body count.

Cyclospora Doesn't Hit Like Food Poisoning. It Grinds — and That's What Kills.

Two deaths now confirmed in Michigan. The danger isn't severity in the acute sense; it's duration. Symptoms can run for weeks, and prolonged fluid and electrolyte loss is what puts someone in senior living, someone with kidney or heart disease, or someone with a disability in real trouble. If you or someone you're caring for has watery diarrhea that keeps returning after seeming to improve, that pattern is the tell — get evaluated rather than waiting it out.
