********MS4 SPOTLIGHT!********
“I am deeply passionate about investing in the wellbeing of and forming long-term relationships with others. I love the idea of not just being a doctor but rather being someone’s doctor, and I find the idea of saying I can grow old with my patients one of the most meaningful and exciting prospects I can think of. I particularly feel called to dedicate my life to underserved communities who need care the most, and I feel strongly about being involved in the larger picture of community health in order to better understand and address the many facets of an individual’s wellbeing. I am also excited to be a more comprehensive resource for the communities I both serve and am a part of by practicing full-spectrum family medicine and including obstetrics in my future practice. I truly feel that I connect so fully with the heart of family medicine that I couldn’t imagine myself picking any other specialty!”

******MS4 SPOTLIGHT*******

“My “training” in Family Medicine started early on—my mom was pregnant with me during her third year of FM residency at the University of Washington! She has been practicing for nearly 30 years in the small town where I grew up, and has had a tremendous influence on my career path. I love the close relationships she has with her patients and the variety she sees every day (Grandmas! Babies! Women’s Health! Derm! OB! Psychiatry!). Family doctors also act as educators and advocates for their patients, and as a former middle school teacher this was a natural fit for me. I am looking forward to providing my patients with full-spectrum care including OB. I also have special interest in working with vulnerable populations, providing comprehensive women’s healthcare, and addiction medicine.”

Community medicine is an important component of family medicine. Today our volunteers helped staff a health fair at a local school to perform screening for important health parameters including blood pressure, BMI, and blood sugar. We also gave patrons of the health fair information about following up with a physician and steps they can take to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Why choose family medicine? In a world of medicine that is becoming increasingly specialized, family docs are central to improving care delivery and efficiency while reducing costs. The broad training that family medicine doctors receive makes them well equipped to adapt to their community. In what other specialty can you do a well-child visit, treat a pregnant person struggling with opioid dependence, do a knee injection to alleviate pain, and have an end of life goals discussion with a geriatric patient—all in the same day?!

Snapshots from our inaugural TAFP/FMIG Post-Match Event last week!

We mingled with community docs, faculty members, and recently matched MS4s, all while swapping stories, sharing advice, and busting myths about careers in Family Medicine! Thanks to all the FM docs who came out, all the almost-FM docs who sat on the post-match panel, and everyone in the FM Dept. who helped make this event happen! Were you there? What would you like to see next year? @ UT Southwestern Medical Center

Why should you consider Family Medicine?

TL;DR: "Family medicine is a wonderful, flexible specialty with plenty of room for people with different preferences, talents, and life and career goals, and for those who want to make an impact on a grassroots sort of level"

But you can read the whole thing for yourself!

Family medicine is a fulfilling specialty many students have not considered due to lack of information or popular misconception.
