Here’s an update from last week and a list of some things we need…

We had a lot of medical concerns with our neighbors who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness.

Our friend with the bad burns had a crash on a bike and broke his clavicle and 3 ribs. We found out about it the next day and took him to the hospital. He left the hospital against medical advice because he was worried about his friend who was outside alone. She gave him a lecture and he agreed to go back to the hospital this afternoon. Please pray for him.

Another one of our housed clients got hit by a car and has a broken spine, pelvis, leg and shoulder and head injuries. She is in ICU and will have another surgery today. Please pray for her.

Almost all of our other friends are struggling with mosquitos. A mosquito in Grand Prairie recently tested positive for West Nile. We had a client die or West Nile two years ago. We are seeking donations of bug spray. See list of needs below.

One of our disabled neighbors received word that she gets to move in to her apartment this Friday. She is very excited and hopes to be able to visit with her daughter who turned 18 and who has been staying with relatives. We need help with the move-in supply costs.

Another disabled neighbor should hear about her move-in date soon. She had to move from where her camp was because the land was sold and a cold storage facility will be built there. She found a car repair garage that has been abandoned and has been sleeping in there. There are no lights and no running water. Someone locked her in there. It was dark and scary. We checked on her and got the door unlocked. This site is actually in Dallas just across the border with Grand Prairie. We serve all the way to Loop 12. Please pray she stays safe and gets into her apartment very soon.

One of our neighbors who drives for door dash needed a new tire and rim. We were able to help with that. She reported to us about a new unsheltered person she saw while door dashing. We will check on him today.

We also got a call about a person wearing several coats and knit hats in the heat. We checked on her and learned that she is from Dallas and is experiencing a mental health crisis.

The Grand Prairie Police Department’s Crisis Support unit compassionately checked on her and determined she wasn’t able to grasp the serious nature of her behavior and how she might be endangering herself. She also had wounds on one of her hands and feet. They sent her to the hospital and she was treated for the medical concerns but not the mental health concerns.

When they sent her to the hospital they impounded her cart which was full of various bags and clothing that was wet and mildewed.

The hospital released her and ubered her back to Grand Prairie’s Auto Impound where her cart was located. Then we were called to try to help her find a safe place.

The hospital had given her a list of shelters and transitional living places and she pointed (she is unable to speak) to some places. We helped her call but no transitional living spaces had space.

Then she pointed to The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center. There is a new street outreach protocol to help people get into the shelter. We tried that and it requires a
warm handoff which we agree is a good idea.

We ubered her and her things to Dallas and followed. We helped her navigate the intake process, but due to her mental state she was unable to complete some of the intake forms. The staff at the shelter, including the security guards, were so kind and patient. We felt proud to be part of the “system.” In the end, they couldn’t accept her because she wouldn’t sign some forms. So they fed her and told her they would hold the forms for 24 hours in case she changed her mind. In total, Tammy Chan, one of our case managers, was there three hours and had to leave her there. We are praying for her and the staff at The Bridge.

We had some wonderful meals delivered to us to deliver to our neighbors who are stuck outside. Thank you Mallory Fry for the hot meals for Wednesday and Thelma Weathers and team from Matthew Road Baptist Church for the great hot meals on Saturday.

Also thank you Christine Moss, the Inglewood Baptist Church Women’s Bible Study and Abundant Life GP Men’s Ministry for the shelf stable meals.

In total we delivered 7 meals for 90 people for a total of 630 meals last week. Our meal delivery days are Wednesdays and Saturdays, so each day we give our multiple meals (one hot and the others are shelf stable) to last a few days. Thank you to the meal delivery volunteers who helped get those meals out. We use undesignated donations and some of our meal delivery volunteers use their own funds to help fill the gaps in funding for the meal supplies.

Virginia Lamb also collected food and delivered it to some of our housed clients who are still struggling with food security. Thank you Virginia!

We also attended several important meetings during the week including a street outreach meeting with other teams from Dallas and Collin County. The meeting was led by Housing Forward NTX and included planning for making sure people experiencing unsheltered homelessness have shelter options and how to handle FIFA with the all the expected visitors.

Another meeting was with the Texas Homeless Network Lived Experience Committee where people with past homeless experience got to share their input into policies.

Another meeting was with a staff member Kosloski from Texans for Housing to learn more about housing policies and changes that will affect our efforts to develop deeply affordable housing in the future.

There were other appointments as well so last week was very busy!

**** LIST OF NEEDS ****

Monetary Donations for…

- Move-in supplies for our neighbor who gets to move in on Friday. We don’t have space to store housewares or furniture. The furniture usually comes with the housing programs, but we purchase new housewares including a microwave (if needed), cleaning supplies, paper goods, silverware, dishes, towels, shower curtain, trash can, laundry basket, a 32 inch TV and antenna, start up food supplies and other necessary items.

- People to sign up to adopt days to bring 90 hot meals or 90 shelf stable meals. See our meal train link. When you click on it, it includes instructions.

https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/y2w5le

- Bug spray. We want to distribute bug spray but we need about 60 more cans. If you can get some bug spray, please take it to the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce located at..

900 Conover St.
Grand Prairie, TX 75051

They are open from 8:30 am - 5 pm on Monday - Friday, except on Fridays when they close at 4 pm. Sometimes they close for lunch due to meetings so you might call before you go. Their number is 972-264-1558.

- Funds to pay our storage unit, vehicle insurance and agency insurance and for gas for all the driving we do.

- We need two adult bicycles in good working condition. “Good working condition” means the brakes sand gears work and the tires are not flat. The bikes also need a light at front and reflectors on back. We have two bikes, but they are in disrepair and we can’t give them out. If someone knows how to fix bikes and can help, we need that too.

- It’s getting hotter outside and we have a local church that has installed showers. We plan to offer some days where we can pick up our friends and take them to have a shower. This effort will require a lot of volunteers. We will make a separate post about this effort.

- Also, because it is getting hot, when the 8 am NBC 5 forecast predicts we will have an actual, not feels like, temp of 100F, we have some local churches that have agreed to open their doors as Daytime Cooling Stations. It will take a lot of volunteers to operate the Daytime Cooling Stations. We will do another post about that as well.

This hard rain and lightening is so hard on our neighbors who are stuck outside. This is the 4th day in a row. The ground is saturated so there will be flash flooding and many of their camps are in low areas.

We will go check on them tomorrow.

Please pray for them.

Thanks.

A message from our Executive Director, Tammy Chan…

Every day we learn something new from our neighbors who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness. We also witness bravery, strength and creativity.

Here’s some of what I learned and saw this last week…

One of our neighbors had a follow-up appointment at Parkland Hospital. I told her the day before to be ready one hour before so I could pick her up and take her. It’s really hard for them to know what time it is when they don’t have a phone or electricity. Some don’t even know what day it is.

When I went to get her one hour early for the appointment she was at the meeting spot ready to go. I asked her how she did that. She said she puts a test strip in her glucose meter and pulls it out real fast and it tells her the time. Wow! That is so smart!

Another neighbor made a hut (see photo) completely out of old tarps she had collected from old camps. That may not sound like anything special, but she intertwined the tarps with living branches and used other dead branches she found as the interior supports. It is fairly spacious inside.

Then she let a sick friend come in to lay down. Neither had a phone. She was worried about him so she went where she knew we would be bringing food and let us know where her tent set up was and told us about him and asked us to check on him. We did just that and he was very sick.

Thankfully, he agreed to go to the hospital. We called an ambulance and they diagnosed him with pneumonia. They called it “flubber pneumonia,” of which we had never heard. You can google it.

They gave him intravenous antibiotics and fluids and released him. We picked him up last night. They discharged him with prescriptions. We’ll have to get those as soon as possible. He just wanted to go lay down, so we gave him some food and took him back to the hut. He was very appreciative.

Another disabled client had to get away from everyone because she was struggling with her mental health and the other people were triggering her. We are glad she realized that and changed what she could (herself) and separated herself. We will help her get back to MetroCare tomorrow.

The new place she found to be was a creative solution. She has been approved for housing and is just waiting on the process. We all can’t wait.

Warning - The next one has some graphic description of a condition.

Another client has a bad burn on his leg. We have been taking him to the Burn Unit at Parkland Hospital on the 6th floor for help treating and cleaning his wounds. He had an appointment on Saturday morning.

It’s so hard to keep the wounds clean when they are living outside, especially when everything is wet and muddy.

Around 11 am yesterday we got a call from the Physician’s Assistant in the Burn Unit asking if we can help him get new shoes. She said his feet are rotting and there are parasites (maggots) in his shoes and his shoes are wet.

Other than our winter jacket collection (we are already ready for next winter), we don’t have a shoe or clothing collection. We just don’t have space to keep shoes and clothes or a way to equitably distribute it, so we take our friends to clothing pantries like the Prairie Food and Clothing Coop. They help a lot of people!

We don’t usually buy new shoes, because if we buy one person new shoes, we have to get them for everyone, especially if they are in a large camp. However, of course we agreed to get him new shoes.

Since I was busy getting the food ready for our meal delivery, I didn’t have time to get the shoes. I called a couple who deliver with us and who told us whenever we have an emergency to call them and they will help. They thoughtfully went and got him a great pair of tennis shoes with a smooth interior and socks.

We had ubered him back and he was walking with a support stick in hospital socks from the drop off point to his camp. We met him on the side of the road and helped him put on his new shoes. A car went by and honked unnecessarily. If they only knew of the struggles and strength they were passing.

He was sooo thankful for the shoes. He has to go back to Parkland next Friday.

He is so brave and strong. We pray we can get all these people into housing sooner than later.

We are thankful for our partners who help make that happen, especially Housing Forward NTX and Partnership Home.

Please pray for these brothers and sisters who are suffering outside. It is an honor to know them.

We need more volunteers to help with our outreach efforts. If you would like to get involved and help, please text us at 214-212-7958.

Thank you!

Please keep all our neighbors who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness in your prayers. While gentle, the rain is still hard for our friends. Everything gets wet. It feels cold. The mosquitos are HUGE and there is going to be a lot of rain in the coming days.

Here’s some updates and prayer requests…

Last night we took one of our friends to the Parkland Hospital Emergency Room. He had a bad burn on his leg. He is in his late 60’s and doesn’t have much sensation in his legs. He wasn’t really aware of how bad the burn was, but it has become infected and had maggots in it and was becoming very painful. Thankfully, the Burn Unit at Parkland treated him with dignity and kindness. He is back at his camp, has his prescriptions and is tired.

Today we (two of our case managers) met online with the Social Security Administration to help him apply for his retirement and SSI to get him to the minimum amount $940. He had no way to apply for his retirement without this help. We are thankful for the Grand Prairie Social Security Office for working with us.

We also helped one of our clients get her ID today. She was so glad and said she hadn’t had an ID in so long! To help her get her ID, we also had to help her get her Social Security Card, voter’s registration card and birth certificate along with a notarized Address Affidavit. Thank you to Jody Thorne Morris for helping us get that notarized. There are a lot of steps that take time and money to get the IDs. We are also thankful for the Grand Prairie Department of Public Safety for helping us with the appointments.

Today we also went to look at a possible place to move one of our o homeless neighbors who is in an apartment now, but who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He is getting where he can’t stay in his apartment on his own. There are no care places that will take his housing assistance and he has a limited income. He is sweet, but also beginning to have emotional struggles and becoming distrustful. He was in a place with a roommate previously but that didn’t work out. It’s a rough situation. The place we checked out today isn’t going to work out because they are more geared towards close to end of life situations and he still is able to get around with help and even volunteers with us sometimes.

We also texted with a mom who is struggling to pay the rent in a motel. There aren’t really any options for help with a motel room and it is not a long term solution. We sent her some options. Her child is not enrolled in the GPISD, so LifeLine for Families is not an option.

We also texted with a male who is wanting to go to shelter tonight. That’s not possible at this time but we will try for tomorrow.

Earlier today, we had a good report from one of our neighbors who just completed two months of drug treatment and he’s doing so much better. He’s going to stay with his parents. That’s major progress!

We have a lot of people sleeping outside tonight. Please pray about all of this as you feel led.

Thank you.

Saturday’s hot meal was cooked by the Grand Prairie Host Lions Club under the leadership of Virginia Lamb and in the kitchen made available by Haven Church of the Nazarene on Belt Line.

It was a beautiful meal!

We have had so many wonderful meals lately. We are compiling a big post on that, but just had to show y’all these photos.

Thank you to all the Lions who planned the hot meals, donated funds, cooked and packed the meals and to all the volunteers who helped deliver them.

We also had shelf stable meals provided by the Wallingford Village Women’s Bible Study. Thank you to Jensen and Pamela Sue Fraser and all the ladies who planned, purchased and packed the meals. Thank you also for bringing cold water and ice chests! That was very throughtful.

Thank you also to Slade and helpers from HAT - Helping Around Town who brought us 240 sandwhiches to go with the shelf stable meal items dropped off by Zelda Freeman who recently signed up to help with a shelf stable meal.

We were able to deliver all the meals and our neighbors loved it.

Great job!

Thank you to everyone who donated towards the move-in supplies for our disabled neighbor who got his apartment today. His journey from the streets to an apartment took several years.

He has disability income, just not enough to rent an apartment without help.

He was very excited today and also expressed his gratitude several times.

He has been going to school on his phone, but that has been difficult, causing him to stop, due to not being able to keep his phone charged. That won’t be a barrier anymore!

His housing would not have happened without the help of other agencies who are dedicated to ensuring homelessness is rare, brief and nonrecurring, including…

Housing Forward NTX who provided the infrastructure for the regional homeless response.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the funding for the housing assistance.

Under 1 Roof, especially Hughes, for navigating him through the housing process.

Healthy Housing Foundation - Texas, especially Vicki Wulfsohn, for serving as his post-lease Case Manager. She actually began meeting with him prior to his housing and helped him overcome some hurdles.

Metrocare Services for providing mental healthcare services.

Parkland Hospital for providing healthcare for him through the Parkland HOMES program.

Social Security Administration, especially the office in Grand Prairie for help with his disability benefits.

Texas Department of Public Safety, especially Rene Soto at the Grand Prairie Office on Bagdad for helping with his ID.

All the volunteers who cooked and packed and delivered meals for him these past three years. Also, Jill Buchanan, Smith and Paws Animal Adoption Center for helping to provide dog food for his chihuahua family members.

The Lord, who he knows, for working behind the scenes to help him.

Yesterday our Executive Director, Tammy Chan, had to opportunity to speak on a panel with leaders from two other small nonprofits, Fort Worth Community Collaborative and Love and Light Ministries about how we each launched our organizations and what we do. It was an honor to be there and learn more about their organizations. They do great things in the geographies they serve.

Thank you Partnership Home for giving us the opportunity to share. Several attendees came up after and said it helped them understand what we do.

05/12/2026

We are thankful to report that another disabled neighbor on SSI, who is experiencing unsheltered homelessness will get to move into his apartment on Thursday, May 14th. The attached e-mail said 4/14, but that was a typo as you can see the e-mail was sent yesterday.

This is the culmination of a three year journey. He has had some losses while outside, including two dogs he loved so much and two “homes” he built for himself out of items that were illegally dumped. One was burned down and the other was crunched by a bulldozer.

He is tired and has fully cooperated in all the supportive processes to get him help, including many MetroCare and Parkland appointments.

We can’t wait to see him and his two other dogs (chihuahuas) get into their apartment.

We need help providing the move-in supplies including new pots and pans, silverware, dishes, microwave, shower curtain, paper goods, cleaning supplies, a 32 inch TV and antenna, food supplies and more. We will loan him an air mattress and two folding chairs until he gets his furniture from his housing program.

We purchase new items each time to make sure they have items that are fully usable and in good shape. We know many of you have items to donate, but we have no space to store those items and the logistics of receiving them is very hard. It just works best for us to go purchase the items and we usually spend about $600-$700 depending on if they need a microwave. He does need one.

We are also struggling to pay for meal packing supplies and gas to deliver the meals.

If you can donate to help with those expenses, our PayPal link is below. We have also included our mailing address if you prefer to send a check.

Thank you for any help you can give!

IMPORTANT NOTE: if you can help with this and you see this from a shared post, please go to our original post to make a comment so we’ll know who can help. Thanks!

A note from our Executive Director, Tammy Chan…

Possibly unbeknownst to some of you I am an artist. Before I retired from the City of Grand Prairie, one of my responsibilities was to manage the City’s Public Art program.

I believe art can change narratives and improve lives and the community in general. The attached video is an example of how art can change narratives. It is from a project I managed before retiring from the City of Grand Prairie. The GPHOO has more plans to implement art projects through our GPHOO Works Program.

For now, though, I/we could use some help.

Tomorrow, I am supposed to do a chalk art mural for the City’s annual Marty Party celebrating World Bird Migration Day and focusing on Purple Martins - a migratory bird that travels from South America to Canada and goes through our area. They actually nest and raise their babies here.

At the same time as the mural project, we need to pack and deliver meals for our neighbors who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness.

We have a calendar set up through our Meal Train page where people can sign up and adopt a day to provide meals.

Tomorrow we will pack and deliver 90 hot meals and 90 shelf stable meals for Sunday and 90 shelf stable meals for Monday and 90 shelf stable meals for Tuesday.

The person who signed up for the hot meal can only provide the hot part but no side items. We are grateful for her signing up because her hot meals are always amazing! Still we need some grocery bags with plasticware and maybe a dessert item to go with the hot meal.

No one has signed up to adopt the meals shelf stable meals for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Our funds are low and I need to be at The Summit to work on the chalk mural from early in the morning until 2 pm.

I have listed the items we need to get all of these meals together and packed by 12:30 pm tomorrow. If you can help, please comment with the corresponding number for item(s) or volunteer spot(s) with which you can help.

We will have a Meal Delivery Team Leader who will organize the items, give instructions and give delivery assignments, which is what I usually do, but I will be busy working on the mural.

If you can help with the items, please delivery them by 11:30 am tomorrow - Saturday, May 9th to…

The Haven Church of the Nazarene
1513 S. Belt Line
Grand Prairie, TX 75051

If you can help with the meal packing, please be at the church by 11:30 am.

If you can help with meal delivery, please be at the church by 12:30 pm to receive your assignments and meals. They may not be ready right at 12:30 pm, but it is good to be there by 12:30 pm in case they are ready.

These activities are open to families with kids as well.

We will provide the grocery bags, plastic ware and napkins. Each grocery bag will get several sets of napkins and plasticware. Then the other items will be added to the bags with the heaviest items being addressed first.

Here’s what we need by 11:30 am tomorrow at The Haven…. Please state what you will bring so we can try to not duplicate.

I have to take someone to Parkland hospital for outpatient surgery this morning so I will watch and update as I can. You will need to watch the comments to see which items are adopted.

Thank you to anyone who can help!

PS: The mural will depict a coincidental moment when a Purple Martin flies over a stream dipping its beak in the water to grab a drink surprisTammy Chanish swimming below. I hope I can pull it off. Please pray for me! I’m already praying! I’ll post a photo of the final artwork on my personal Tammy Chan page around 2 pm tomorrow.

The Marty Party is a fun and free event at The Summit. See 1st Comment for more details.

Thanks again to anyone who can help make this all possible!
