Water is essential to the future of Texas communities, businesses, working lands, agriculture, and industry—but so are healthy bays and estuaries.

A newly released scientific review by 13 Texas coastal scientists raises concerns about the proposed Inner Harbor Desalination Plant in Corpus Christi, finding that current modeling does not yet provide convincing evidence that brine discharge would avoid harmful ecological impacts. The report highlights potential increases in water stratification and low-oxygen conditions that could affect fish, shrimp, crabs, and other marine life.

The scientists support the need for long-term water supply solutions, including desalination, but call for additional analysis, independent peer review, and greater transparency before moving forward.

At Texas Conservation Alliance, we believe Texas can meet its growing water needs while also protecting the bays, estuaries, fisheries, wildlife, and coastal economies that sustain our communities.
