Bobby Pulido was born and raised in Edinburg, Texas, where he still lives today with his wife. He’s the proud father of four sons, raising his family in the same community that shaped him. The son of a farmworker-turned-musician, Bobby grew up with the values that define South Texas—hard work, family, humility, and faith.

After graduating from Edinburg High School, he studied political science before pursuing music, eventually becoming a two-time Grammy Award-winning Tejano music star. For nearly three decades, he toured and performed across the U.S. and beyond, but he’s always stayed closely tied to the Rio Grande Valley.

Outside of music, Bobby has also run small businesses. He’s signed paychecks, balanced budgets, and dealt with the everyday challenges local business owners know well. That experience gave him a real understanding of what it takes to create opportunity in South Texas.

At home, his biggest priority is being a husband and father. Raising four sons in Edinburg has only deepened his connection to the community and his focus on the future. In his free time, he enjoys hunting and being outdoors, staying close to the land and traditions he grew up with.
Bobby believes in practical solutions and common-sense leadership. He talks often about the pressures families are facing—from rising costs to healthcare to the realities of life in a border community—and the need to focus on what actually helps people day to day.
For Bobby, the Rio Grande Valley isn’t just where he’s from, it’s who he is.

WHAT: Dallas community organizations and local partners will mark the 53rd anniversary of Santos Rodriguez with two public remembrance opportunities: a community program on Friday, July 24 and an open invitation for Dallas residents to lay flowers at Santos’s gravesite throughout the weekend.

EVENT 1 — “Remember Santos” Friday, July 24, 6:30–8:30 PM

An evening of reflection featuring a panel discussion, artistic performances, and community sharing about the life, legacy, and impact of Santos Rodriguez.
Where: La Cantera, 1050. N. Westmoreland, Dallas.

EVENT 2 — “A Rose for Santos” Friday–Sunday, July 24–26, 7 AM–7 PM Oakland Cemetery, 3900 Oakland Circle, Dallas

Residents are invited to visit Santos’s gravesite at any time during the weekend to place a rose or flowers, offer prayers, or spend a quiet moment in reflection.
A tent, chairs, cold water, and sidewalk chalk for youth will be available. This is a simple, informal act of remembrance—no speeches or scheduled program.
Local civic and community leaders will share short social media messages encouraging Dallas residents to participate.

WHY: To honor the memory of Santos Rodriguez and reaffirm the city’s commitment to dignity, justice, and community healing.

Frances Rizo Community Activist & The Rizo Park is named after Frances Rizo, a long-time West Dallas civic volunteer, educator, and lifelong community activist who fought for equitable education and civil rights in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

This year marks the 53rd anniversary of the tragic death of 12-year-old Santos Rodriguez, who was killed while handcuffed inside a police car, on July 24, 1973, by a Dallas police officer.

We invite members of civil society, local government leaders, and the private sector to join us in reflecting on his life, his legacy, and the lasting impact of this loss on our community.

The evening’s program will include a panel discussion, a performance, and an opportunity for community members to share how this event has shaped their lives and our city’s history. Together, we will honor Santos’s memory and reaffirm our commitment to justice, healing, and unity.

Friday, July 24, 2026 marks 53 years since 12‑year‑old Santos Rodriguez was murdered by a Dallas police officer while handcuffed in a patrol car.

In remembrance, Dallas‑area organizations, in collaboration with The Friends of Oakland Cemetery, invite the public to visit Santos’ grave at Oakland Cemetery, 3900 Oakland Circle, Dallas, TX 75215, to place flowers or offer prayers.

The site will be open for quiet reflection 7 am-4 pm, Fri July 24, 7am-7pm, Sat July 25 & Sunday, July 26.
