Exciting update from Gloria, founder and president of JTCCC
After several months of waiting, we are excited to kick off the repairs inside Bataan. Our goal has been to preserve, protect, restore, and activate the historic Bataan Center. Guided by the feedback from our neighbors, we began to draft spaces that provide educational and entrepreneurship opportunities for our neighbors and the community. A few months ago, JTCCC shared a layout showcasing those possibilities. Please review the attachment below.
In our review with specialists and experts, we identified a few spaces that will need to be updated. Those spaces are the restrooms, maintenance closet, and kitchen. The current restrooms will be moved towards the old maintenance storage room. This will open up the backroom, creating more space for programs, meetings, or activities. Additionally, the kitchen will be moved towards the former computer room, allowing for outside access to the restrooms. The kitchen will be a teaching kitchen and will be a little bigger than the original. In the front former office space, we will include a mercadito. The La Bajada Market will offer healthy food and veggies for our neighbors. If you would like to suggest or request a certain item be offered, or if you have a small business or are a vendor that would like to sell at our Mercadito, please reach out to me at [email protected].
Below is a packet with all the drawings and changes I discussed above. Join us in restoring the Historic Bataan Center. Join our email list or text messages. Please consider donating to the restoration. We are a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, and all donations are tax-deductible. Outside Bataan:
The current windows are in poor condition, do not meet current building standards, and are not energy-efficient. They are in dire need of replacement. Replacing them increases our cost upfront, but we will be reimbursed for the energy savings of up to 40%.
The paint removal process is much slower than anticipated. It will continue through the summer until it is complete.
Upcoming Events:
We are thrilled to have our neighbors back at Bataan for the La Bajada Neighborhood Community Association meeting this past Thursday, June 25, 2026. We hope to continue to have our neighbors home. Join us for the next meeting on the 4th Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm.
Save the date: November 2, 4, and 6, 2026 -JTCCC, in collaboration with Dallas Free Press, Vecinos Unidos, and other community members, will pay tribute to our veterans across West Dallas. We will host three nights sharing untold stories, videos, pictures, food, music, and memories. We will have three altares, one for all (ages), one for pets, and one for our veterans. If you would like to participate, create, and/or sponsor an ofrenda, please contact Gloria at [email protected].
