The Osteosarcoma Institute

The Osteosarcoma Institute The Osteosarcoma Institute is dedicated to improving the survival rate of osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma is the most common bone cancer, affecting about 900 people each year in the U.S., most of whom are children, adolecents, and young adults. Survival rates have remained largely unchanged for decades, leaving too many patients without effective options after first-line treatment. The Osteosarcoma Institute (OSI), founded in 2017, is exclusively dedicated to changing that reality. Guided

by leading scientists and physicians, the OSI funds groundbreaking research, identifies and accelerates promising treatments, connects patients and families to trusted resources, and raises awareness of this rare disease. Since its launch, the OSI has committed millions of dollars to innovative projects at top cancer centers and research institutions, driving new strategies and collaborations aimed at finding better treatments and improving survival. Earlier this month, OSI was proud to host a welcome reception in Dallas in honor of our new Executive Director, Alli Murdoff.

Hosted by Katlyn and Bret Alexander, the evening brought together board members, ambassadors, patient families, and donors for cocktails and conversation to warmly welcome Alli and hear updates on OSI’s research and programs.

OSI is honored to have Alli’s expertise, her industry knowledge to help advance osteosarcoma research and her advocacy to help strengthen our partnerships, open new doors of opportunity, and push progress forward toward finding a cure for osteosarcoma.

Thank you to everyone across the Mount Washington Valley in New Hampshire who supported the Camden Bailey Cancer Foundation events benefiting Camden’s Quest 2 Cure Fund at OSI.

OSI was honored to join the Camden Bailey Cancer Foundation to celebrate Camden’s life and legacy, and to share how Camden’s Quest 2 Cure Fund is already helping advance promising osteosarcoma research. The first project supported through the fund is a multi-center clinical trial for pet dogs with osteosarcoma, research that could help improve outcomes for both canine patients and children, adolescents, and young adults facing this disease.

We are deeply grateful to the Bailey family and this incredible community for their commitment to accelerating better treatments and cures for osteosarcoma.

Thank you to everyone who supported the 3rd Annual Race for Hope: Enduro Kart Team Race. Because of your generosity, we raised more than $134,000 for the Miles of Hope Fund at The Osteosarcoma Institute to support osteosarcoma research.

Whether you raced, attended, donated, bid in the auction, or volunteered, we are so grateful for the incredible support shown in honor of Miles and his memory.

This year’s event also completed funding for a research study led by Dr. Isidro Cortés-Ciriano, marking the third study supported by the Miles of Hope Fund. We are deeply thankful to our sponsors, volunteers, and Race for Hope Committee for making this milestone possible.

Even if you are just starting in your career, you can still make a meaningful contribution to organizations and causes you care about.

By naming OSI as a beneficiary on your life insurance or retirement plan, you can make an incredible impact on the advancement of osteosarcoma research that will extend far beyond your lifetime.

Even a small percentage can make a big difference. If osteosarcoma has impacted your life, a planned gift is a lasting way to honor or remember a friend or family member and support OSI’s mission to end this disease.

When Josie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her shoulder, she and her family decided on a total humerus replacement limb salvage surgery. Experts told Josie she would have little to no use of her arm.

After the surgery, her mother, Kathy Jo, connected with The Osteosarcoma Institute for support. Using OSI Connect, a free resource that connects osteosarcoma patients and families with experts who can offer insight on next steps, Kathy Jo met with OSI Director Lee Helman, MD, and felt reassured in Josie’s treatment plan.

Today, Josie’s rehab includes a mix of occupational therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, swimming, cardio exercise, and play therapy. Each day, she gains a little more confidence and a little more strength as she works toward a cancer-free life with a functioning arm.

Willie Tichenor was a charmer with a sense of humor. He was a drummer, a theatre performer, a youth group leader, and the lead singer of his band, CloverStreet. He was fiercely intelligent, endlessly loved, and his story has fueled a movement for over 20 years.

OSI and QuadW Foundation operate in pursuit of “What Willie Would Want.” Willie believed that we can do better, and with support going directly toward osteosarcoma research and advocacy, we can.

In honor of Willie’s birthday, consider making a donation to OSI. 100% of proceeds go directly toward osteosarcoma research which strives to find better treatments for patients and, ultimately, a cure.

Clinical trials move new osteosarcoma treatments from research labs into real life. But it can be hard to know if a trial is right for you and your family.

In our latest article, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center oncologist J. Andrew Livingston, MD, shares what each trial phase means, common benefits and risks, practical factors to consider like travel time and biopsies, and key questions to ask your care team.

Read the story:

With clinical trials, new treatments move from research to real life. Here is what you need to know and how to decide if they are right for you.

Support from families like the Shumadines has a direct impact on osteosarcoma researchers like Dr. Ryan David Roberts at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH.

Dr. Roberts’ research uses machine learning to identify perfect matches of drugs to individual tumors, personalizing treatment and ensuring better responses. His focus is on osteosarcoma metastasis and prevention, particularly to the lungs. In 2025, Dr. Roberts was an OSI research grant recipient, receiving $499,990 for this research.
