💙 Denise’s Ovarian Cancer Story

Denise's kidney wasn’t working properly, so her doctor ran several tests. A CT scan revealed a cancerous lymph node near her kidney, and surgery later showed the cancer started in her fallopian tubes. “Had my kidney not acted up, I would not have known about this at all,” Denise says. Genetic testing also revealed she carries a gene from her parents that increases her cancer risk—something she wouldn’t have known otherwise.

Through surgery, treatment, and many doctor visits, Denise has learned important life lessons. She now tries to enjoy each day, take care of her health, and find joy in simple things like being outside. Staying positive can be difficult, but she relies on her friends and family and takes things one day at a time.

Through NOCC, Denise has received helpful support, including meals when she was too tired to cook, trusted information, helpful resources, and a connection with a local survivor who understands what she is going through.

💙 Phyllis’ Ovarian Cancer Story

Phyllis first noticed abnormal bleeding, which many attributed to menopause. A visit to her gynecologist led to an endometrial biopsy and referral to a gynecologic oncologist, where she was diagnosed with endometrial, cervical, and ovarian cancer. She underwent a hysterectomy, internal radiation, and chemotherapy.

“Having gone through this phase of my life, I became even stronger and able to accept anything that was put in my path,” she shares. Phyllis finds hope in seeing other ovarian cancer survivors and in ongoing research. Her advice to newly diagnosed survivors: take one day at a time, be grateful for every sunrise and sunset, and stay strong—you will get through this.

Through NOCC, Phyllis has been able to connect with other survivors in Pittsburgh, shares experiences, and supports newly diagnosed survivors, offering hope and a sense of community.

New research is looking at a “one-two punch” treatment approach that combines targeted therapy with other medicines to better fight hard-to-treat gynecologic cancers. Early results show it may help some patients respond better than with standard treatment alone.
