Low-income communities of color have historically been excluded from planning and design practices. Today, as housing costs continue to rise, many of these same residents are experiencing housing affordability issues that threaten the rich neighborhood fabrics they have built over generations.

[bc] exists to address issues of uneven development and inequity across Texas and nationally — and donors are critical to helping us build community capacity through design, housing delivery, and the arts.

We’re aiming to reach 50 donors to power our work by December 31, and we need your help to get there. Click the link in our bio to make your year-end gift today!

We were honored to receive an award from AIA Dallas’s Built Design Awards! [bc] received a Merit Award for the Historic Tenth Street District’s neighborhood resource center, affectionately known as the Little Blue House at 1208 E 10th Street. Thank you for your recognition of this community-based work.

Located in the heart of Tenth Street, 1208 E 10th was identified as an ideal location for a community gathering space where neighbors could gather, organize, and plan when [bc] purchased it years ago. Though the house was tired, its scale, visibility, and central position made it well-suited to serve the Historic District’s needs. Today, the restored space has become a cultural anchor for the neighborhood, hosting community-driven events and exhibitions. Every gathering reflects a shared investment in creative expression, education, and neighborhood pride.

The list of people and organizations who have made this recognition possible is long - this has been a large effort scaling several years. We would like to express our gratitude to the following:

Tenth Street Residential Association
The Texas Historic Commission
Texas Historical Foundation
City of Dallas - Office of Arts and Culture
The Dallas Foundation
The Meadows Foundation
Mary McDermott Cook
The Summerlee Foundation
Hakeem Adewumi for his creativity and passion throughout his curation of arts and cultural programming .house
Marion Marshall for her wisdom, guidance, and championing of the Little Blue House
Tyrene Calvesbert, Marcelo Lopez Dinardi, and the Texas A&M Spring 2024 architecture studio for their diligent work on the 10th Street Models
And all former and present [bc] staff from 2015-2025 for seeing this through!

This past summer, the Little Blue House partnered with artist and curator Hakeem Adewumi and .house to showcase the creativity of local Black artists through a series of programs, including a live opera, an art exhibition, and film screenings.

The closing reception of Lou Nell Sims | A Retrospective on September 12th is a wonderful opportunity to experience firsthand the kind of arts programming we hope to be able to continue hosting at the Little Blue House. This event will be both the closing reception for the exhibit — your last chance to view her incredible artwork — and a fundraiser that is part of North Texas Giving Day to support the Little Blue House.

Your contribution makes this work possible. Join us on September 12th and donate now through North Texas Giving Day. Link in bio to give today.

*Neighborhood residents are our honored guests. All neighborhood residents are welcome to attend at no cost.
