just put Trump Republicans on notice by dropping a banner in the middle of Criminals Perpetrating an Authoritarian Conspiracy (CPAC)! We will not sit idly by as they scheme and devise ways to make it harder for us to vote, love, dream, and choose! We know that they have chosen to thrust the US into facism, by claiming that the 2020 election was stolen, trying to rewrite the Constitution, and making it harder for people of color and poor people to vote. With today’s action, we are in solidarity with Generation Vote, and promise to hold those trying to steal our democracy accountable!

Slide 2:
Blue background with white text stating K is a Black tarns human rights activist, and she has been forced to seek asylum following anti-trans violence in her country of origin. She is trying to establish herself in the U.S. after being separated from her partner and baby in the migration journey. K is in the process of transitioning and was recently thrown out of their new home due to being trans.

Slide 3:
Blue background with white text stating K has trusted friends she would like to live with, but they cannot afford to house her without rent, medical, and food assistance. Due to bureaucratic red tape in the U.S. immigration system, K cannot work. U.S. asylum law blocks asylum seekers from accessing a work permit for at least 6 months after submitting their asylum process.

Slide 4:
Blue background with white text stating K is HIV positive and a survivor of sexual violence, so community shelters are not a safe option for them. We are looking to the community to help cover K's short term costs. Any little bit helps.

Our friends at Grassroots Leadership in collaboration with other partners have been working with 11 men and their families that were arrested under Operation Lonestar. Last Friday they paid their bonds and after a lot of twists and turns this morning learned that the Segovia 11 had been moved from the Segovia Unit.8 of the Segovia 11 are currently at the McAllen CBP office. Right now there are people in front of the McAllen CBP office demanding the release of these 8 men. Please help us amplify this demand by sharing this call in graphic. Please make calls and let us know what they tell you!

📢 How ICE Detention Blocks Communication, Barriers 1 & 2: Remote Locations & Transfers.

A new report documents how ICE detention centers and telecommunications corporations inhibit communication between detained migrants and their families, advocates, and attorneys, isolating people, harming their emotional wellbeing, impeding access to counsel and silencing whistleblowers. The situation has worsened since in-person community visitation remains closed despite the possibility to reinstate on-site visitation in accordance with CDC guidelines. These barriers amount to the forced disappearance of migrants.

The report, by the University of California San Diego’s Mexican Migration Field Research Program, the Gulf Coast Immigration Collaborative and Innovation Law Lab, entitled “Cut Off: How ICE Detention Facilities Block Communication,” identified 6 barriers to communication. This post focuses on the remote location of ICE detention centers and transfers to and between ICE facilities.

In 2018, about 64% of detained migrants were held in rural areas. The cost and time of travel—in addition to risk for relatives who may themselves be undocumented—are often prohibitive, leaving telecommunications as the only option for contact. Transfers cause confusion, loss of information, and isolation from family, lawyers, and advocates who help with legal cases and mental health. In 2015 over 60% of detained migrants were transferred at least once.

You can read a summary of all 6 barriers and the report’s recommendations at bit.ly/CutOffSummary.
