Men of Nehemiah is one of five Southwest Region finalists for a Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards grant. All five finalists receive funding, and the final amount is set by a total score that public voting feeds into.

Which means there's a ceiling on what any one person can do — and no ceiling at all on what a room full of people can do.

The discipline didn't start in Dallas. It started with a Colonel.

Before Men of Nehemiah was a program, it was a father's last resort. Louis Harrell Sr. — field artillery, U.S. Army, later a pastor — built som**hing for one son he refused to give up on. Order. Accountability. A hierarchy a man could stand inside of when nothing else in his life held still.

"He's not finished with them yet. And neither am I."

"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." — Philippians 1:6

So we march. We drill. We push men past the line they were sure was their limit, and then a little further, because a man who learns he was wrong about his limit starts wondering what else he was wrong about.

And it's never just him. Every decision he makes reaches every life his life touches.

A need arose. People who love to serve answered.

"Let us rise up and build." - Nehemiah 2:18

What started as a blueprint is becoming a building. Every donation, every hour of labor, every prayer has gone into walls that will stand for men who haven't walked through the doors yet — and for the families and communities that will get them back.

All glory to God for His provision through His people.

Grand opening ceremony: Sunday, October 25. More details to come.

What was once a life sowing destruction now sows life everywhere he goes throughout society, his family, and his business.

Phase 1 gets a man clean. Phase 2 makes him useful.

There are three phases in our nine-month residential program, and Phase 2 — Tools to Succeed — is the long middle. The stretch with no adrenaline in it.

The crisis has passed. The withdrawal is over. What's left is the work: 13 hours of clinical counseling every week. Biblical teaching. Marching drills. Uniforms. Making the bed. Showing up on time, every time, whether he feels like it or not.

And som**hing else happens in Phase 2. A man starts getting handed to the guy behind him.

Our Support Brother program pairs men in their first 30 days — the hardest stretch of Phase 1 — with men in Phase 2 who just walked that road themselves.

You don't have to be finished to be useful. You just have to be a little further down the road.

"So that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God." — 2 Corinthians 1:4

No man phases up on a calendar. He phases up when he's met the requirements — and the whole house is in the room when he does.

"I was praying every day for a new heart and for freedom from the man I used to be."

Depression he couldn't name. Substances to quiet it. Then a jail cell, where a seed of willingness got planted in a life that looked like it had nothing left to grow. He started to hear the still small voice again. Nehemiah is where that voice got room to speak.

Today he's starting over and giving thanks to God, to his family, to this house, and to his mentor Tyler, who saw som**hing worth redeeming before he could see it himself.

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you." - Ezekiel 36:26

What are you letting grow in your mind?

You're the gardener. Good seed, good fruit. Bad seed, bad fruit.

But a garden doesn't tend itself. You have to watch what takes root — pull the bad thoughts like weeds before they spread, and cultivate what's good.

"For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." — Proverbs 23:7

Take every thought captive that doesn't produce good fruit.
