Prairie Festival is Twelve Hills Nature Center's celebration of the wild, wonderful nature growing right here in our Oak Cliff neighborhood. Join us for a free, family-friendly afternoon filled with live animals, native plants, storytelling, and good food.

🌿 Native Plant Pop-Up Shop — North Haven Gardens
October is the best time of year to plant natives in North Texas — and one of the hardest times to find them. We're fixing that. North Haven Gardens is bringing a curated selection straight to the prairie, so you can go home with exactly what your yard needs at exactly the right moment.

🦅 Live Hawks & Owls
Get up close with birds of prey in a live raptor encounter with Window to the Wild. These incredible animals are a highlight— don't miss it.

🐍 Reptile Encounters
Meet some of Texas's most fascinating reptiles and learn about the important role they play in our local ecosystem.

💬 Ask-A-Master-Naturalist
Talk about our prairie with one of our knowledgeable North Texas Master Naturalists. You'll never look at your neighborhood the same way again.

📚 Storytime with Whose Books
Our friends at Whose Books bring the magic of reading to the prairie. A perfect stop for little ones and the adults who love them.

🌾 Activities for Kids
Art projects, MathFinder activities and walks, hands-on nature displays and face painting — there's plenty to explore for little ones and curious minds of all ages.

🤝 Community Partner Booths
Connect with local organizations like DFW Wildlife, Master Gardeners, Methodist Medical Center, Xerces Society and more, who share a love of nature, community, and the Oak Cliff neighborhood. Stop by to learn what they're up to and how you can get involved.

🍕 Pizza from Cenzo's Deli
Fuel up with pizza from the neighborhood's own Cenzo's Deli. Because an afternoon outside is always better with good food.

Yesterday, you showed up for the prairie.

Together, 71 donors gave $17,080 to Twelve Hills Nature Center during North Texas Giving Day. We're incredibly grateful.

Your gifts will become seeds and native plants. They'll put tools into the hands of volunteers and support the ongoing stewardship that keeps our restored prairie healthy. They'll help children explore, students learn, and our community experience the remarkable diversity of nature right here in North Oak Cliff.

In other words: you've helped protect the prairie today, and helped cultivate the people who will protect it tomorrow.

The prairie will keep growing. Wildflowers will bloom. Bees and butterflies will visit. Children will explore. Volunteers will get their hands dirty.

Today is North Texas Giving Day. 🌾

At Twelve Hills Nature Center, five restored acres of Blackland Prairie provide something increasingly rare in Dallas: a place for nature to be wild, and for people to experience it.

Each year, roughly 10,000 walks, program visits and participants bring people into the prairie. Children discover insects hiding among the wildflowers. Students learn in an outdoor classroom. Neighbors step off city streets and onto a half-mile trail through nature.

All around them: 1,700+ species identified here.

Protecting the prairie isn't only about caring for the land. It's also about helping people experience it, understand it, and discover why it's worth protecting.

Your gift supports both sides of that work: restoring and stewarding native Blackland Prairie, and providing nature education that grows a community who will care for it.

A restored prairie may look wild, but keeping it that way doesn't happen by accident. 🌾

For generations, prairie was shaped by fire and grazing bison — forces that kept woody plants in check and made room for native grasses and wildflowers to thrive.

At Twelve Hills, tucked into a neighborhood, we don't have fire or bison. We have people.

Our volunteers do that work by hand: selectively mowing, removing invasive plants, seeding native species, and tending the land year-round. And they show up — 2,000+ volunteer hours a year, ~60 group workdays, and 150+ additional volunteer visits.

Restoring the prairie isn't the finish line. Protecting it is ongoing.

We’ve had 57 days without measurable rainfall per the Saturday Dallas Morning News. Temperatures mostly reached highs above 100. Here are a few stars of the prairie that I observed at Twelve Hills this morning. There were plenty of insects, birds and squirrels but I didn’t manage to get photos of them.

Five acres may not sound like much.

But walk through Twelve Hills and look closely.

Native grasses and wildflowers grow alongside bees, butterflies and other insects. Birds find food and shelter. Reptiles, mammals, fungi and countless other organisms make up an interconnected community of life.

In fact, more than 1,700 species have been identified at Twelve Hills.
With less than 0.1% of the original Blackland Prairie surviving as intact remnants, restoration gives us another way to bring native prairie habitat back to the landscape.

And Twelve Hills is proof that even a small restored prairie can support a remarkable diversity of life.
