The Dallas chapter celebrated the special life of Sylvia Collins at their recent meeting, which was also attended by others who worked with her. Super activist Lou Luckhardt first introduced Sylvia’s best friend, member Frances Rizo, who shared the story of their years long activism where they always raised their fists during protests and rallies. She expressed the thoughts and feelings of many present about how much she will miss her dear friend. TARA President Gene Lantz presented a slide show he put together showing many pictures of Sylvia during various actions. He also later shared his thoughts about his friend. Lou Luckhardt then shared his memories of getting to know Sylvia because she was always at every meeting or action TARA did.
It was an honor to have Texas State Representatives Cassandra Hernandez and Terry Meza attend to share their thoughts about the profound effect Sylvia’s activism had on her community and so very many people. DJ Garza of Workers Defense Project found Sylvia’s name on every sign in sheet for any activity or lobby trip since they opened their office 13 years ago. DJ learned the same thing that most groups did where Sylvia volunteered. She was always there doing whatever was necessary. Field Organizer Judy Bryant read a note from Mission Oak Cliff to the group as the chapter made a donation in memory of Sylvia. She also shared how friendly and kind she was and that she was always available for anything she was called upon to do. Mary Strickland also said how caring and kind Sylvia was. We will all remember and miss her.

Our Dallas TARA Chapter was truly blessed to have our dear friend Sylvia Collins as a super activist member for many years. As a very kind, caring and dedicated person, she always showed up for meetings and actions which we did to advocate for senior and retiree issues. She also welcomed people to our meetings and “spoiled” some of us by always bringing our refreshments instead of us going to get them. We are sad and will miss her very much, but we will honor her by continuing our fight against all the attacks on seniors.
