ALLIANCE/AFT: STOP CUTS TO THE DALLAS PUBLIC LIBRARY

As Dallas’s largest union of education workers, Alliance/AFT opposes City Manager Tolbert’s proposed $3.3 million cut to the Dallas Public Library budget.

Libraries are a crucial piece of our city’s social infrastructure, providing free access to media, but also opportunities for connection to employment support, youth and family programming, and events spotlighting local culture. Local libraries are especially important for our students in Dallas ISD, where many neighborhoods may lack a clear social locus or safe places for families to spend time together, particularly in the summer months when most school buildings are closed. Reducing hours and cutting staff directly increases spatial and social inequity for our kids and families.

Additionally, these cuts to library staff and hours come as a number of school libraries have become de facto testing centers and students interact with existing library spaces less than ever before. These shifts occur as reading for pleasure has declined to one of its lowest points in decades, while unregulated generative AI has eroded both media literacy and digital citizenship.

Cuts to the city library budget are occurring for their third consecutive year. Many libraries already close by 4PM on weekends, for many families the only time they are able to visit together.

We urge city council members to join Dallas education workers in opposing these cuts. We also note that the 2024 passage of charter propositions S and U limits the ability of council to seek savings elsewhere, and we encourage council members to educate their constituents on the fiscal constraints these charter amendments represent.

We call on our members to attend upcoming budget town hall meetings in their respective districts to make our concerns known.
