“For 44 years, the institute has sought to link the civic life of our city to the most important teachings in Western literature, philosophy and history. It has been a training ground for city leaders as well as public school teachers who deepen their understanding of some of the greatest works ever penned.

Founded at the University of Dallas by a number of scholars, including the legendary literature professor Louise Cowan and her husband, physicist Donald Cowan, the institute had a mission of building up Dallas as a great city. A great city needs to see itself as a part of history, as a link in a greater becoming of humanity.”
