At our meeting yesterday we listened to Tom Wing talk about the early history of Van Buren. He has always presented information about events and people in Van Buren that helped shape the future of our city that we get to enjoy today. If you want to know more about Van Buren from the mid-1700 to today he is the one to ask. Thanks to him for speaking to the club as he always provides something new that he has recently discovered.

During our last meeting at the Van Buren Chamber office we listened to the Van Buren boys high school basketball coach. Coach Brad Autry has been coaching in Van Buren for 7 years. Also in attendance were senior class players, Gabe and Brodie. The Pointers have started the season with a 3-0 record inclusive of a great win against Rogers High School.

Wishing the VBHS basketball teams a great year. Go Pointers!

A special thanks to the sponsors who helped make our Van Buren Lions Club Pancake Breakfast a great success. Money raised from this event helps provide glasses to area adults in need. The Club also uses funds to give eye test to area kids from 1 to 4 years of age. The testing equipment was purchased by the Club and can let a parent know if their child should go to an eye doctor to get a professional examination.

At our last meeting we heard a presentation from representatives about the weatherization program sponsored by OG&E and AOG. You have been paying a small monthly fee on your utility bills each month to cover theses services. Find out how they can perform an energy audit on your home by calling 844-413-3065 at no cost to you. Winter is around the corner bringing with it higher energy bills. Thanks to the ladies for providing information about this program for home owners.

Special day at our club meeting this week. Very honored and pleased to have Dean Rowland presenting a Lions Club International Certificate of Appreciation to our recently deceased fellow Lion, Joe McDaniel. Receiving this certificate is his wife, Karen McDaniel. Lion Joe was instrumental in facilitating the new Gene Bell Lions Club Park here in Van Buren. This certificate is one of the highest awards of recognition given by the Lions Club in the world. Lion Joe will be truly missed by all of us who valued his leadership and dedication to serving our community.
