The GOPIO Dallas team was honored to hear insights from Dr. Thomas Abraham, Chairman of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), as he reflected on the journey and impact of the organization since its founding.
Mr. Abraham shared that GOPIO was established in 1989, when over 3,000 delegates from the Indian diaspora gathered in New York for the First Convention of People of Indian Origin. During its early years, the organization focused strongly on addressing human rights issues affecting people of Indian origin worldwide.
Over the decades, the Indian diaspora has grown significantly, with communities becoming an integral part of the mainstream in many countries. Today, GOPIO continues to move forward as both an activist and advocacy organization, working to protect and advance the interests of the global Indian community.
Mr. Abraham also highlighted a significant milestone in GOPIO’s history: the organization was among the first to propose the concept of dual nationality for Indians abroad, which eventually led to the creation of the PIO Card and the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) program.
Looking ahead, the GOPIO team is excited to announce the formation of a new GOPIO Dallas chapter in Dulles, Texas. With over 100 chapters worldwide, this new chapter will further strengthen engagement with the Indian diaspora.
The Indian community in Texas represents an important and vibrant segment of the Indian American and global diaspora community, and GOPIO looks forward to expanding collaboration and initiatives in the region.
