On March 12, 1990, disability activists made history at the
U.S. Capitol. Over 1,000 people with disabilities rallied on the steps of the Capitol to demand passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Then, 60 activists -- many of them wheelchair users -- abandoned their chairs and crawled up
all 83 marble steps to the entrance. Jennifer Keelan, an 8-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, was
photographed pulling herself up those steps.
Four months later, on July 26, 1990, President George H.W.
Bush signed the ADA into law. The ADA was born because disabled people refused to wait. They used their bodies, their voices, and their
community.
