JWV Celebrates the U.S. Army’s 251st Birthday!

Since it was established by the Continental Congress in 1775 – more than a year before the Declaration of Independence – America’s Army has played a vital role in our nation’s development and secured independence from the British in a grueling eight-year struggle. At times, the Army was the symbol of America’s nationhood and a rallying point for patriotic citizens, including members of the Jewish faith who served with honor and distinction then, and in every conflict since.

This year, Army leadership is highlighting the many ways it has challenged, empowered and equipped our Soldiers, because “Be All You Can Be” is more than just a slogan, it's the Army way of life. [Official 251st Logo: U.S. Army Public Affairs]

Today is Women Veterans Recognition Day

Jewish War Veterans of the USA honors the 250-year legacy of women who have served our nation with courage, leadership, and resilience since its founding in 1776. Women are, and always have been an essential part of America’s strength.

Today we celebrate The Women's Armed Services Integration Act, enacted on 12 June 1948 by President Harry S. Truman. For the first time, it allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, a significant step that enabled women to pursue military careers beyond wartime service.

May is Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM), proclaimed in 2006 by President George W. Bush in response to resolutions passed by both the House and Senate. We are featuring prominent Jewish historical figures and modern day leaders throughout the month:

Miriam “Mimi” Miller Shor was a dedicated nurse, patriot, and proud Jewish-American. Raised in a traditional home, Mimi’s parents had high hopes for her future. In 1943, she was on-track to graduate from the Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania General Hospital School of Nursing. But with World War II raging, Shor chose a different path and joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.
First stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station, then San Diego Naval Hospital, Shor quickly stood-out. Soon after, she was deployed to Naval Fleet Hospital Guam, where she cared for the wounded from brutal battles on Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Her tireless dedication brought comfort to thousands of Sailors and Marines.
Following the war, Shor married and raised a family, but her service didn’t end there. Mimi joined the Jewish War Veterans and rose through the ranks of the National Ladies Auxiliary. In 1961, Miriam “Mimi” Shor became its National President, continuing her lifelong mission to care for veterans. Mimi is fondly remembered for her compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to those who served.

May is Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM), proclaimed in 2006 by President George W. Bush in response to resolutions passed by both the House and Senate. We are featuring prominent Jewish historical figures and modern day leaders throughout the month:

Today we honor Medal of Honor recipient Benjamin Salomon, a World War II battlefield doctor and enduring source of inspiration. Although a dentist, he enlisted as an infantryman; Salomon was later commissioned as a medical officer and deployed to the Pacific Island of Saipan. During a surprise attack, he stayed behind to defend his field hospital and let others escape. He was killed in action, surrounded by the bodies of 98 enemy soldiers.
Initially denied the Medal of Honor due to his role as a non-combatant medical officer, Salomon’s heroism was finally recognized in 2002. With no immediate family, Jewish War Veterans of the USA proudly welcomed him into ours, where his legacy continues to inspire.
