🐔 The chicken shed at Virgen del Rosario School is quickly becoming one of our most exciting examples of sustainable development.

With more than 300 chickens, the shed produces nearly 2,000 eggs every week—creating both nutritional and economic impact.

🥚 NUTRITION: The school has expanded its food program to provide a protein-rich breakfast each morning, giving children an egg from the school’s own flock to start their day strong, while continuing our support of the school lunch program.

And there’s a sweet bonus to the morning routine: Princesa and her mom get to spend a little time together collecting the eggs for the school each morning. 🥚❤️ What might seem like a simple chore has become a special moment of connection—and an important part of keeping the program running.

💰 INCOME: Remaining eggs are sold in local markets. In just the first five months, the shed generated more than S/12,600 ($3,500+) in additional income for the school—funding chicken feed, new chickens, and critical infrastructure.

But the real success is the people behind it.

Faculty and parent volunteers lead the program, while students bring the enthusiasm, curiosity, and commitment that keep it growing.

This is sustainable development in action: nourishing children today while creating the resources, skills, and opportunities to sustain the solution tomorrow.

🐔 320 chickens. One school. A whole lot of opportunity.

At Virgen del Rosario School in Sullumayo, our chicken shed is doing more than providing eggs for the school lunch program. It’s teaching students how to work together, care for animals, take responsibility, and build skills that can create opportunity for their families and communities.

And everyone has a job! - Every two weeks, the first graders line up to change the chickens’ bedding—removing soiled hay and replacing it with fresh, clean hay to keep the hens healthy and provide a clean place to lay their eggs.

It’s their responsibility. And they’re proud of it. ❤️

While they work, teachers use posters created by the high school students to teach them how to feed the chickens, maintain the shed, and care for the flock.

From first grade to high school, every student has a role to play.

That’s the power of a sustainable solution: feed children today while helping prepare them for tomorrow.

Sometimes, accompaniment looks like walking two miles together.

At The Quispicanchi Project, one of our deepest commitments is to celebrate, promote, and embrace the rich cultures and traditions of the people and communities we accompany.

Culture is not something to observe from a distance. It is something to celebrate, share, and experience together.

This past June, we were honored to participate in the Annual Festival of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Andahuaylillas, home to the Temple of Saint Peter. At the heart of the celebration is a procession of the saints through the city, bringing together families, organizations, businesses, and communities from throughout the region.

As part of this year's celebration we were invited to name a patron saint—a Catholic tradition rooted in choosing a saint whose life and example inspires and guides a community or organization.

The Quispicanchi Project chose Saint Paul, whose story of crossing boundaries, building community, and accompanying others resonates deeply with who we aspire to be.

Our Summer Companions and Interns joined the two-mile procession, carrying the statue of Saint Paul alongside families and organizations from throughout the region.

We are humbled and grateful for these invitations into moments of celebration, tradition, and friendship. Because the bridges we seek to build aren't built through programs alone. They're built through relationships, shared experiences, and simply walking together.

We don't come to Quispicanchi to serve. We come to accompany. To learn. To build friendships. And to walk together.

🦷💙 Every child deserves a healthy smile.

As we prepare for our annual dental campaign in Sullumayo, we’ve been reflecting on a special visit this past July to CEBE San Antonio, the only special needs school in the Quispicanchi region.

Because of the incredible generosity of the donors and supporters who rally behind our annual dental campaign, we’re able to put surplus supplies to work—extending much-needed dental care to children who otherwise may not have access to it.

During our visit, we:

🪥 Trained parents on the unique oral health needs of their children
🔎 Provided basic dental screenings and diagnostics
🦷 Provided free silver diamine fluoride (SDF) treatments to stop the progression of tooth decay
✨ Applied fluoride treatments to strengthen and protect teeth

And these special kiddos? They were SO brave. 💙 Their courage, their smiles, and the dedication of their parents reminded us why access to compassionate dental care matters so much.

🦷 Healthy smiles start with healthy habits. 💙

For The Quispicanchi Project, oral health means more than providing dental care when a problem arises. One of the foundational ways we accompany communities is by helping children learn how to prevent those problems in the first place.

Led by our Oral Health Program Coordinator, Sol Angela, our dental health workshops teach children from the earliest ages why brushing matters and, just as importantly, how to brush properly. Through our partnerships with local schools and parish-sponsored after-school centers, children receive hands-on education along with a new toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental hygiene kit.

Did You Know: Throughout the year, we provide over 300 local children with dental hygiene kits four times annually, giving them the tools and knowledge to build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

But prevention is only one part of the journey.

This year, our Smiles of Hope Annual Dental Campaign will bring critically needed—and often life-saving—dental care to more than 250 children and families in rural communities in Quispicanchi.

This July marked a special milestone for the Quispicanchi Project: our first-ever U.S.-based Encuentro Partner Retreat! 🇺🇸🇵🇪

For seven meaningful days, we welcomed administrators and teachers from our three U.S.-based high school partners to Quispicanchi for a time of thought partnership, connection, reflection, and firsthand experience.

The experience gave school faculty and administrators the opportunity to witness firsthand the places, people, and programs their students encounter when they participate in an Encuentro Retreat in Quispicanchi. Together, they accompanied our work at San Antonio School, Virgen del Rosario School, and our support after-school programs, while also experiencing the beauty and history of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.

Most importantly, this time together strengthened the relationships at the heart of our work. By experiencing Quispicanchi firsthand, our partners gained a deeper understanding of their students’ experiences and an even stronger connection to the communities and people who make these Encuentro retreats possible. ❤️

We are especially excited to welcome Ursuline Academy of Dallas as a new Retreat Partner for the upcoming school year! And we can’t wait to welcome Regis Jesuit High School back to Quispicanchi this October for their 3rd Encuentro Retreat.

Tupananchikkama.

In Quechua, there is no word for "goodbye." Instead, there is Tupananchikkama — until life brings us together again.

As we reflect on this past summer, we want to express our deep gratitude to the six Summer Companions who spent the past two months with us in Quispicanchi, Peru. Coming from five universities— Creighton University, Loyola University Chicago, NYU, the University of Colorado Boulder, and the University of Oklahoma—they joined our team not simply to serve, but more importantly to accompany.

Over the course of the summer, they taught in schools, supported after-school programs, strengthened our sustainable agriculture initiatives, contributed to critical human rights programming, interned alongside local businesses, and helped us improve our internal systems. Their work was meaningful and their contributions invaluable.

To the members of Comunidad 6: What mattered most wasn't what you accomplished—it was how you showed up. You invested you time, energy, curiosity, and compassion into building relationships. You became part of the our family, strengthening the foundation of friendship and mutual trust that makes all of our work in the region possible.

To our friends and partners across the region, thank you for welcoming these young leaders so generously. And to our Summer Companions, thank you for embracing this experience with open hearts and a willingness to learn as much as you gave.

Derek, Drew, Hannah, Jada, Kalyn, and Tristan: thank you. Thank you for leaving your mark on our team, our partners, and our friends throughout the region. You will always have a place here. The door is always open, and we—and our friends across the region—look forward to the day our paths cross again.
