🇺🇦 Enjoy one of our senior dances Dubotanets, performed at Westfest 2025. It tells the story of the Ukrainian spirit—unyielding, deeply connected to the land, and expressed through rhythm, energy, and joy.
The Dubotanets (Дуботанець) is a well-known traditional Ukrainian dance that comes from the Carpathian region, especially the Hutsul area of western Ukraine. Its name comes from the Ukrainian word “dubaty” or “dubotaty”, which means to stomp, pound, or tap the feet forcefully against the ground.
The Dubotanets is not just a dance, but also a story of resilience, pride, and community spirit. It reflects the hard life of the Hutsul people in the mountains, where strength, agility, and endurance were highly valued.
• Stomping: The loud footwork symbolizes the strong bond between people and the earth. Farmers, shepherds, and hunters relied on the land, and the stomps were almost like a conversation with it.
• Competition: Traditionally, men performed Dubotanets in a spirited, competitive style—testing who could stomp harder, faster, and more rhythmically. It showed off stamina, bravery, and masculine energy.
• Celebration: The dance was often performed at weddings, harvest festivals, or community gatherings, where it united people through music and movement.
• Musical Character: The dance is usually accompanied by fast fiddles, trembitas (wooden alpine horns), and drums, giving it a driving, powerful rhythm.
Symbolism:
• Strength & Endurance – the relentless stomping represents resilience in the face of hardship. • Connection to Roots – it affirms identity and belonging to Ukrainian land and culture.
• Joy & Energy – while rooted in strength, it also expresses celebration and vitality.
