New Mexico is set to provide state funding for gender-affirming care for trans youths following federal funding cuts to Medicaid.

“Health Care Authority is planning to continue covering these services using state funds”, a spokesperson told the Santa Fe New Mexican on 21 August.

The new Department of Health and Human Services rule, which will go into effect on 13 October, prevents Medicaid and state Children's Health Insurance Programs from covering gender-affirming care for trans and gender-nonconforming children under 19 years old.

By some estimates, at least 10,000 youth aged 15 to 17 in the Houston area don't have a place to sleep on any given night. Many identify as LGBTQ+ and may be fleeing unsupportive or unsafe living environments. A new emergency shelter aims to give those most at risk a safe place to rest their heads.

On Monday, LGBTQ+ community leaders and advocates unveiled Asia's House, the city's first temporary emergency shelter for q***r and trans youth. The shelter is a partnership between Houston's Montrose Center and Grace Place, a nonprofit that provides support for homeless youth in the region.

Academy Award-winning producer, podcaster, political commentator and journalist Van Lathan weighed in on the recent debate around trans athletes, remarking that if you can’t give a transgender person your acceptance, you should opt for silence.

Lathan’s remarks come from a 7 August episode of his ‘Higher Learning’ podcast, which he co-hosts. He said regarding WNBA athlete Sophie Cunningham’s recent vocal support for barring trans girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports, saying, “If you cannot gift trans people with visibility, humanity, and acceptance, could you at least gift them with silence? Could you at least shut the f*ck up about it? Could you at least leave them the f*ck alone?"

“You guys are doing your victory lap on this sh*t, f*cking up the country. You mean to tell me there are wars happening in the Middle East, food prices are crazy, like the environment is in the sh*tter, we can't eat lettuce without cr*p in our pants, all of this stuff, and you still picking on these people after all of this time?” Lathan continued.

WNBA star Gabby Williams, who plays for the Golden State Valkyries as a forward, shared her support for trans rights and what she really thinks of the debate around trans athletes competing alongside cisgender athletes.

In a 20 May interview with The Local W, Williams said, “There’s a lot of discourse around trans athletes and what they can compete in. I would welcome a trans athlete on my team or against my team. Anytime. I don’t think it’s a problem in the world, it’s just another way to kind of attack trans people.”

The US Department of Education will stop tracking statistics regarding the bullying of trans and non-binary school students.

The policy change means that it will no longer record how often trans and non-binary students are bullied, harassed and assaulted at school, and whether school districts have related safeguarding policies in place. It will also now explicitly exclude ‘gender identity’ from its definition of r*pe and s*xual assault.

According to K-12 Dive, the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights said it “determined that its costs outweighed its benefits” when it came to tracking the data.

“OCR acknowledges commenters’ concerns that the proposed reversion to a binary approach to categorizing students by s*x could pose other data quality challenges for jurisdictions where students may be legally assigned a s*x other than male or female,” the department added.

“OCR believes the prior longstanding, science-based, and widely accepted practice of categorizing individuals according to their biological s*x, male or female, is the more prudent policy.”
