We talk about Veteran su***de. We rarely talk about military spouse su***de. Both deserve to be said out loud.
Behind every deployment, every move, every homecoming, there's a spouse holding it all together. Not because it's easy. Because someone has to.
In 2023, 98 military spouses died by su***de, part of a rate that has climbed steadily for over a decade, even as the population of military families has gotten smaller.
They face their own barriers to asking for help: fear of how it might reflect on their service member's career, the isolation of moving every few years, the difficulty of building a support system that doesn't get uprooted right when it starts to matter.
They serve too, even without a uniform. Their mental health deserves the same attention we give the person who wore it.
