This Black History Month, we are profiling Saint Leo University faculty members as they share who inspires them during this month and beyond.

Dr. Renee Sedlack is inspired every day by one of her former students to “continue to work hard to raise the next generation of school leaders.”

“Dr. Latoya Jordan was my student when I was the principal at Lacoochee Elementary School many years ago,” said the associate professor of educational leadership in Saint Leo’s Graduate Studies in Education Program. Jordon earned a Doctor of Education (EdD) degree in 2024. Now, she is the principal of the school where she was Sedlack’s student. “Under her leadership, she strives to instill the belief that hard work, perseverance and determination will enable the children who attend Lacoochee Elementary to realize their dreams.”

Black History in Pasco County: Starting in 1924, black students attended school at the Booker T. Washington School located in the Little Home Baptist Church. Willie Stanton was appointed teacher for the one room school in 1924, M. E. Houston in 1928, and M. Stewart in 1929. That year there were 18 students between the ages of 6 and 14. In 1930 Carrie Roberts was the teacher, and Columbus Fulwood was her supervisor. Grace Bennett took over for Roberts the following year. Ruby Lee Mack and Cecilia Taylor Tyson taught at both the Booker T. Washington School and the Odessa School. Ruby Lee Mack Copeland served as Principal in 1942. The Odessa school for black students closed down in 1948.

Black Labor Leaders: a new generation
Faced with was thought of as an impossible task, Chris Smalls worked to organize Amazon workers into a union. In March 2020, Smalls and his colleague Derrick Palmer began leading actions for Amazon worker rights. In April 2021, they began to call themselves the Amazon Labor Union (ALU). Even at that time, most of the country thought that unionizing Amazon staff was an impossible task. On April 1, 2022, the ALU proved doubters wrong – the workforce at the Amazon Staten Island warehouse JFK8 voted to establish a union. pictured: Chris Samlls
